Did the F40 ever come from the factory with twin vertical fog lights set in the the rear grille ?

If not would this be reason to fail Classiche certification ?

your first picture that you posted is of a prototype F40 , ( 5 slats in the rear wing ) , rear fog lamps in the rear grille are very rare in europe . hope this helps , Andy.

quite right Andy, thats why I tried to find a production car for the 2nd pic :) Not all euro cars came with lamps, and to my knowledge, no US cars did.

Greyboxer: Stocky is correct - the rear grille-mounted fog lamps are a very rare appointment on European F40s. They were fitted to prototype cars as he points out, and to a few very early production cars. It was not a typical European production feature. The reason they were discontinued on production cars is obvious, what with the way cars are used in Europe and the proximity of the units to the full effect of the engine's heat.

This of course begs the question: what year is the car? Classiche should be in a position to determine if it is n original application for that car, and if so, it should pass.

Hum, I'm a little lost here. From what I have read only some prototypes had the fog lamps up there. That one pic that RufMD posted shows them up there and down on the bottom where most of the Euro cars are. That, I have never seen before. And the shot above this post shows a car with one fog lamp and a Ferrari logo where the other might have been?

So is it a fact that a few production Euro cars had the fog lamps up there? Or do we just think some might due to some confusion with prototypes or maybe owners who fitted them there?

You are on the right track Ryan: Several prototypes had the mesh screen-mounted fogs. Several early production cars (one or two notable cars and a couple of cars tested in magazines that Ive noted) still had these.

The car sporting the fogs both in the rear valance AND in the mesh screen almost certainly has had these added post-production.

If you are a driver who traverses Europe's motorways and autobahns regularly in inclement weather, I can see the benefit in having the fogs higher up in the screen as opposed to lower down in the valance, so post=prodution modifications don't surprise me.

However, when you see a European car like the French-registered F40 that jorge.enzo has posted WITHOUT any fogs in the rear lower valance and sporting them in the rear screen, it almost certainly is original and it is likely a very early production car.

I also wouldn't rule out the possibility of a European customer being able to special order the units to be fitted on the car when built/new, but as Ive said, they are a rare application on a Euro car.

The question arose as I had never seen them before

77107 in the Galleria has them and I thought it would be most ironic if they were displaying a car that could not be certified !

However it would appear from all your replies the lights are probably correct so many thanks

77107 is the chassis number? If so, thats an early car...

Here is what I learned during a visit to Classiche last week. If the powers that be decide that a car is correct they simply make it so. Witness the RM SWB Cal Spyder that had its "numero interno" engine number "restamped" to make it correct and to bless it. The logic is convoluted but quite easy to follow -the factory is the source of the criteria and if the factory decides that something is correct then it miraculously becomes so.

I am a believer in Classsiche, but am worried the gods will take discretion too far... that will not be good for the marque
