I've now seen it on 3 different cars for sale in the past year; wrong size TRX's on 400i's.

The correct TRX tire has gone up to $535 each plus shipping and people are starting to take shortcuts. This car is a good example: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200225411118&rd=1
Look at the profile shot and you'll notice something doesn't quite look right. Its the tires, they are too small. It has 240 (45)'s on it instead of 240 (55)'s. The one in the trunk is the correct tire.

The 45's were availabe for around 1/2 the price of the 55's. It screws up the speedo, ups the RPM's, and changes the way the car rides and handles. I understand what people are trying to acomplish; "Beautiful car with new tires all the way around..." and I'm afraid some potential owners here might not know about this. So be careful guys, this could be a $2,200 mistake if you miss it.

I didn't realize there was a correct diameter tire but wrong profile for cheaper. I agree that will screw up the speedo and of course up the RPM's relative to the speed you want to go and of course it effectively ups the spring rate of the car, but while those might be annoyances they should not have any impact on the functioning of the car should they???

I think I noticed this car on Ebay about a month ago and I remember thinking the exact same thing. Tires look way to dinky. Great info!!!

For a short time a year ot 2 ago you couldn't buy the 240/55's in the US. There was no stock anywhere.

Its like putting 13" wheels on your Lincoln Towncar. Will they work? Sure, but you don't want them on there.

I can't find the 240/45's on coker's site now. I've sent Jerry, the coker rep, a PM we'll see what he says and I'll report back here.

One more item for the buyer's checklist! When I bought my car, I knew that I wanted new tires anyway and only did a cursory examination of the spare to see if it was there. It was but of course I didn't realize that the tire had no air in it (the tire is stiff enough to not show that in the spare tire well) because of a nasty puncture. Fortunately I was able to take the best of the take offs for a real usable spare!

As with any used car purchase, you can't assume anything about the car, even the stuff that you can see!

Got this back from Jerry at Coker Tire:

    "Dave,
The 240/45's are still available as are the 240/55's. The 240/55's are back ordered right now until around the end of July though. That's a pretty decent size difference in those 2 tires (almost 2" in diameter). Let me know if you have any other questions.
    Jerry"

Also, I forgot to mention that the 240/45's are the TRX GT, which is a little different than the standard TRX.

It goes on the front of the TR's, but the TRX-GT was designed for the BMW 6 series.
