If you had it to do over again, would you pick the same career path?

  1. Yes, I love what I do and make good money; my life rules!

  2. Yes, I don't like what I do, but at least I make a good deal of money.

  3. No, I make good money, but would trade that for doing something I really like.

  4. No, I can't stand my job and it doesn't pay well, so life sucks!

From the "what do you do" thread there was a question posed: Would you pick the same career/job/work again if you had it to do over again?

Seems like a reasonable question. If you are successful at what you do, would you do it again because of the success, or because you love what you do? If you hate what you do, would you do something else despite your success? If you love what you do and aren't financially successful, would you still do it?

As for me, I like what I do, but am getting a bit bored. I think things should be mixed up a bit and career changes should be made every 10-15 to spice things up. Obviously, though, this is difficult to do for those who are stuck in a rat race- so money, more than fancy cars and nice houses, just gives you added freedom to choose what to do...

Good point. It is just a reaction to the other thread in this section: "What do you do?"

Mods can move it if they so desire, I just thought I'd stay in the same section as the OP...

Yes, you do need to be financially stable and secure before you could explore a different career or venture in your life. I am 43 years old and have the regular rat race as other Americans do. Money can be the roots of all evil and poison when you have young kids. I can easily afford (Not to sound arrogant) all of the household help as the nanny, butler, maids, profesisonal cook, and chaufeurs but that would just spoil the kids. I do own a rather large home and I limit the cleaning staff for once or twice a year. Everyone has to do chores and every kid does not get the priviledge to drive a vehicle unless they are able to pay for fuel. They need to take the school bus instead of drive the car to school, and need to get jobs if they want to get anything special. The only promise I give the kids is that I will pay 100% for an undergraduate, graduate, and/or professional education for as long as the maintain a respectable grade point average. As for pursuing other goals, I will definitely be open to the idea if I did not have anyone to report to. When my youngest son, now 14, goes to college in four years, it would be an ideal time, but then the question is if I am being selfish to my wife. This is the main reason that we all have that small window of opportunity while we are between 18 and 25 without any dependents and support from family to pursue your ultimate goals. Money does not replace your moral obligations as a parent and a spouse. Money cannot buy everything. It could, but the outcome with the children situation is you are going to have kids that are spoiled rotten and a nuissance to society and what would that do to your conscience when you are in your eighties or the final days of your life.

    For whatever its worth

As for the person that asked what this has to do with Ferraris, it has to do with Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Chevys, Hondas, Homes, and Life in General. Materialistic things versus happiness. Does a Ferrari make you happy or do you own one for a reward or trophy of how successful you are and how much you like yourself?

It has to do with a bridge to get for Ferrari or other luxurious items and able to keep it. That is how I am reading it. If people do not like what this thread is about, nobody is forcing them and they can get LOST!!

Interesting that out of 26 respondents so far only one is willing to do something they don't like because of the money. To the kid in the other thread that said he didn't care if he hated his job as long as it made him enough money for a Ferrari...I would say, be careful...you may get what you wish for!

I don't know of any job that has not produced multi-millionaires. You just have to be enterprising and scale up. Teachers - tuition centers pull in a half a million in urban areas. Shoes - there's an Italian guy who makes shoes with breathing holes in the soles -- he is looking to be bigger than Nike. Chefs, car salesmen, printing, plumbing, you name it.

If you are not 10+ years into your careers, count yourself lucky, and look around to see what tools/education you need to move up a few levels.

If you like money enough, that is its own reward and most likely you will get to 80% of your goal before getting burnt out on something you hate doing. So just aim to get enough together for an 599, and you should have enough for a 430 by the time you just can't take it anymore. :)

Can I answer: Yes, I would have stayed in IT, but I would have chosen a different area of it, such as learning all the Server Networking and Cisco-type stuff, instead of staying in mainframe MVS/TSO/ROSCOE/CA stuff ?

Don't have much of a "career" yet, being only 18. However I do like what I do, and it pays the bills, so no I don't think I would change it. :)
