That's unbelieveable. In Monte Carlo? They are all rich..

Can't believe someone has the nerve to steal one there. It's such a police heavy state.

Sorry to hear, hope your friend gets his car back

I had a 1981 308 GTB that I was driving just above Cannes in 1985. i was living there for about a year. One night, someone tried to hijack me using mace while I was coming home from clubbing. He stopped in front of me and got out of the car. I thought he was just asking for advice or directions.

I was lucky. When he sprayed the mace in the car window, I just hit the gas. His shot missed a direct hit on me as I had the window mostly up. I escaped by driving like a maniac and could barely see with watering eyes. The 308 had headlights with the french yellow bulbs which are not particulary good either. No halogen in those days!

Scary stuff. The next day, I reported the licence plate of the guy who came up to my car. It was a red 1985 Corvette with Swiss plates so it was easy to remember. Turns out, that car was stolen also. It was a dead end.

Another time I had a nice rental BMW 5 series that was BLOWN UP outside a restaurant one night in Antibes. Yes, blown up at 3AM. The police said it happens as a warning for the restaurant owner to pay protection money. Luckily, it was a rental and no one was hurt. Hertz gave me a new Merc.

Yes, these things happen there too.

lol@ the car in Antibes... this is amazing. how long ago was this?

As i posted in ME chat, Russia, Kazakhstan, etc... is the way to go. So many crazy cars in almaty, wonder how many are stolen...

Exotic theft is becoming a sport now in Europe. A White Conti GT Speed was stolen in Poland 3 days after it arrived in the country... from a safe parking. And it was like 2 weeks ago... It's a flashy car, moreover not everybody drives a bentley in Poland... but no one has ever seen it since... those people are professionals.

It was 1985. The police said it was the work of the local mafia gang. The Cannes Hertz office did not seem surprised when I called them and told them what had happened. They just wanted the police report. Of course, I had it fully insured as they warned me in advance that having a "nice car" on the street was an invitation to a problem.

If you think about it, Monaco would be one of the few places it wouldn't be as noticeable... Terrible to hear it nonetheless.

Cant believe it. Monaco is the only place where you can park your Ferrari anywhere with a million dollars cash in the passenger seat with the motor on and not worry about someone stealing it.

Saudi Arabia? No way in hell.. that's poor mans land. You are thinking of the UAE. And still, while there are many rich people, a few has most of it. In Monaco, almost everyone is rich :D

The average household in the UAE is worth about $17mill. So much for a few have most of it.

All the cars they steal are probably going to Russia, makes sense. I didn't think it would start happening in Monaco though.

wow it sounds like a beautifully optioned & unique vehicle .. such a shame but I agree on GP w.e high end cars are a dime a dozen in Monaco so a thief probably fancies his chances of getting away with it. it wud be interesting to hear if this was the only exotic to go missing over the w.e

I think the point is that in Saudi with an automatic death penalty (or at least getting your hand cut off) for stealing a 599 - it's probably safe

I've also always heard that Albania and Romania are very safe becuase no one is ever going to steal a car from the sort of person that can afford a Ferrari there

What's your source? And you can't use an average, as it will rise when a few have a lot, and some don't
