Thinking of installing an MSD 6 series unit to my 308GT4 to improve performance . Have done this on another carb ferrari car and was impressed. Problem is though the GT4 has two coils. Do I need two MSD units? The car is a single distributor model with magnetic pick up's x2 . Spoke to MSD technical and they said only use one coil to run both banks which seems wrong.

Rule #1: The guys who work the MSD tech lines don't know anything about Chevys, let alone a Ferrari.

You need two: One for each pickup. You will need to rewire the coils to eliminate the ballast resistor.

Do not buy the MSD5, buy The MSD 6A, not the 6T or 6AL. You do not need any hookup for a rev limiter or timing boxes.

I am also thinking of a MSD for my gt4 and read off the MSD technical site an account of another gt4. They suggested putting the unit in the trunk because of heat. I don’t particularly like that idea dose anyone have any thoughts?

The units are pretty easy to hide in the trunk area. Have you considered a Pertronix or Electromotive set up? Pertronix will appear totally stock, while the Electromotive will look obviously modified...

    I own a 1982 Mondial 8 with 2 distributors and 2 Digiplexes.

Last year I spent some wasted time trying to have 2 MSD 6A units installed. Finally got the car started, but had to also purchase 2 MSD timing advance controls (as suggested by MSD Tech). However, with both timing controls, we could never get the timing to stop doubling to over 60 degrees. With only one timing control installed, it wouldn't work at all.

Constantly tried to get help from MSD, but my mechanic informed me, that they became quite unhelpful, and didn't want to know. Having spent months, trying to get them to work, it was too late to return them to MSD.

At that point, I "bit the bullet", and having already spent all this money on 2 MSD units plus 2 timing controls, I went to Nick's Forza and purchased his excellent Electromotive Ignition system. My mechanic had no problems installing Nick's system, the car starts and runs beautifully, reving cleanly all the way to the red line. I have been using it several days per week since March 2008, with no problems. Excellent, and well worth ever penny.

Forget MSD. I still have 2 MSD units and 2 Timing control boxes, sitting here unused. I plan on selling them later as they could be used as individual units, or on other vehicles with single ignition.

Why not the BSM unit that superformance is selling?

I've got one of these units and like it a lot. It has a very stock appearance as it is almost completely self-contained in a single distributor, and yet it is fully programmable.

It will cost a bit more than MSD boxes, but is still quite affordable, although I suspect your weak dollar will make it somewhat expensive....

I have had a single MSD 6AL for 6 years mounted in the trunk with no problem - starts every time, has been easy to work with and no more single bank failure. You will need one box per coil/trigger mechanism.

The multiple strike feature I do believe is an improvement, and as excellent as the BSM unit is, it does not have this feature. I used a single Mallory Unilite electronic distributor 5 years ago as the BSM was then unavailable.

I would also agree with geo3 that MSD is NOT compatable with later digiplex/microplex systems.

I have the Crane XR700 set up on my GT4 and it works a charm.Starts every time and has cured my constant plug fouling. The XR 7000 units are located in the engine bay and are hidden at the rear right upper quarter panel sort of on top of the oil cooler. You neeed two of them and they are connected to a photo electric sensor in one of the distributors. It cost me $800 fitted

Scott the pictures of Rocco's set up is exactly how mine is set up.The location of the boxes are ideal as they are still in the engine bay and dont get much heat

Thanks for the photos and the info. I think this is the way I will go. I hate the idea of losing room for my golf clubs in the trunk. Funny thing to worry about but it is pretty tight in there.
