I could be completely off base but the heat you see generated is not a product of the header type but exhaust temperature. Your shielded headers glowed the same, you simply could not see the color. Not being aware of the light conditions to estimate heat but a red heat visible in sunlight indicates a temperature of 581C/ 1077F. I know 355's run hot but don't know standard operating temperature at the exhaust prot. That would be the answer you need. Is this too hot or normal?

Remove the cats (which back up the exhaust gases) and the factory headers will last forever. The reason they fail IMO is because they get way too hot when the cats start to clog as they get older. When they are almost completely clogged, the result is engine bay fire. This back up in heat is IMO one of the reasons the valve guides are burning out in some cars. Running test pipes is the only way to go. A challenge pipe in place of the exhaust valve helps big time. Also the challenge grill disperses lots of heat as will. Ferrari told me that the engine oil temps reduce by up to 20 degrees with grill alone. This is only my opinion but my 95 355 has all original headers and guides and I feel that the above modifications have helped big time. The other thing many dont do is run the hell out of their 355 every now and then....Dont drive it like your affraid to break it....Every time out should see close to redline now and then. These babies were ment to rev.

Excellent pics! I was hoping to get some video of this while driving using a race cam, I always wondered if they were glowing. Guess so!

    I think that's a camera not a camshaft. ;)

quick update, stebro have been true to their word and UPS confirms my replacement muffler and a set of test pipes to trial will be with me friday [tmrw] - just 5 days after my request went in to Dan @ stebro. Credit where its due, i'm happy with that level of service.

Will test pipes and matching muffler solve the heat problem? Watch this space and i'll let you know in due course. i've also read somewhere in here that a challenge grille will reduce oil temp by around 20 deg - think i'll add one to the shopping list.

It certainly cannot hurt, but I believe those numbers are from Challenge cars on a track, at high speeds. You may see the same, but only on the freeway. I doubt it does much of anything tooling around town. I have never seen excessive oil temps on my car, even when in stop and go traffic on a 90 degree day, never goes above the straight up mark. And will be around 170 or 160 when cruising on the freeway (depends on outside ambient temp).
