I also posted this in the daytona registery hoping for some help there as well. I took a 2 hour drive (one way) in my red daytona to asheville NC, and one hour into my fun drive up to the Ferrari event in asheville this weekend, I heard a clanging noise from under the hood that turned out to be coming from the AC compressor, I think, because when I turned off the ac switch, noise died. Has anyone has an experience similar to this one? I had heard a foreign company made those compressors for ferrari and that ford had used them as well. Does anyone know what the part number is? Thanks for any help. I wish that AC would blow a little cold air...it seems to go out of freon each time after it is repaired and working :(

I beleive the compressors are US made York; In any event York's are cheap, fit and look right.

I have had them on my C4 and Daytona for years.

Daytona AC is notoriously weak; works fine when it is not hot out.

I had the two AC belts start slipping on mine last year and it made a pulsating squealing noise. Proabaly not what you are hearing but I would at least check. The belts are a pain to install as there is very little clearance between the crank pully and frame member as over time the engine begins to sit lower on the mounts.

Hope it's not your compressor. I looks like it would be difficult to get to as its burried fairly low and close to the radiator.

    Good Luck

I am in Arizona and the a/c is fine as long as it is under 95, hotter than that it's unacceptable in the AZ sun. Part of that may be the fact that there is a lot of green house and my windows are not tinted. I have been told that there is a japanese compressor that might work that will blow very cold, but don't know of anyone that has had any experience with it.

The A/C compressors are typically a universal mount and the York Co. has been bought out by Climate Control Industries, which is a good thing (buyouts aren't always good) as the company has improved the product (higher cfm, multi-refrigerant, etc) and lowered the costs.

Here's an article I wrote in another thread in this same section with a similar title

For $300 you can increase the compressor's volumetric flow by 40%

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You don't need to change the condensor or evaporator, just spend $300 and get a higher capacity A/C compressor with moderns seals from tyhe company that bought the York division.

See this article I wrote when mine went bad and I researched/replaced it:
    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=136100907&postcount=8

It fits in the exact size/form as the original and is a bolt up replacement, but has superior seals, accepts universal refirgerant (R-12, R-134A, R-22, etc), and has 40% increase in volumetric efficiency (10 CU as opposed to the old 6 CU).

Coach, I believe that it was Terry (where has he gone?) had a series on upgrading the A/C in his Daytona. It might be on the old board.

mot sure an upgrade is what I want...I hardly drive the car/s so all I really need is to bring it back to original standards, if possible. York does make a/c compressors that look exactly like the one I have in the car, I was hoping someone could help me find one. I have looked on EBay, as always, but not sure which model :)

They are rebuildable, you might try that locally, or Carr Products here in Houston is who handles the new compressor line, they can cross over your ID to the replacement unit....

    Coach,

There are two parallel threads going on here about A/C in a Daytona. You might want to check out the other one. The Sanyo/Denso [Sanden for short] is the most efficient of A/C compressors. But they are not original if that matters to you. Apparently a few have had the old Yorks casing w/ modern innards. The biggest problem is vent location and design that cools the windshield and not the driver.

It was not built by York, but licensed from York (like Bonaldi and Bendix). (At least none of my Daytonas said York on them.) But, it is exactly the same as a York, so either will do it if is the compressor. I recently purchased a NOS from Ferrari, along with smog equipment, etc., so the stuff is still around.

Remember to use the R12 Freon, or changed your hoses first, the new, enviornmentally friendly, stuff ruins the hold hoses. You can still get the R12 if you ask around.

On my 365 GT 2+2, the real answer was as posted above -- go to the 10 cubic inch compressor. It has the capacity to do the job adequately. You will not get the ability to freeze to death as you can in a modern vehicle, but it will work well enough for comfort in traffic at 90 degrees.

    R-12 is the most efficient.
You could run propane as it is a superior refrigerant carrier, but has an undesirable, explosive side effect ...

    coachi,
You probalbly have a failed bearing/clutch assembly. The oil for the compressor may be low, and can be checked by removing the side plug and fabricating a small dipstick from welding rod. However, it's probably too late to bother with that. Getting the compressor out with the engine in place is a miserable job, but possible. Below is some information I've accumulated that may help in the repair.

    Bought rights to York
Generally need P/N off compressor tag
Need clutch dia. And number of grooves
Typical- 1 groove, one wire, 6” dia. (Daytona uses two groove version, mention that it faces backwards for rotational purposes)
    Their number 024-21942

Li at Algar says he has new compressors, but cannot get Ferrari-specific clutches anywhere. Ted Rutland has used clutches from 308- same part, for about $450.

    Coach,

I have known Li at Algar since the 70s when I owned my 1st GTC. For parts he is a great source and a VERY knowledgeable guy. Li is one of the best.
