I've never driven either but would say the F40 just looks better. Think it's that simple IMO.

I'd take an F50. There is just something about having a mid-engine V12...

    I admit: I have never driven F40 an F50...what a shame!!!.

But i think people are never subjective.
They just judge that F40 is better because many magazines, which sometimes bring nonsense news or want to evoke our interest, say that F40 is still "better".
We also read more articles about F40 than about F50.
Maybe the magazines should write articles about F50.
It seems like as if many magazines make advertising for F40...tztz.
Jounalists have real experience with cars, but they never seem to be honest and true..
For journalists it is just "only" about writing interesting and people always want to know which car is better..They want a conclusion
and magazines know it..so they just judge although it is impossible.
more judgement and more sell...that´s the motto for most magazines.
and people believe what the magazines say.

I''d take an F50 for sure if I had to choose one. I have seen many F40s throughout my life, on and off the road. One of my favorite cars of all times, but it doesn't make my stomach "roller-coaster-like" sick when I see one. On the other hand, I have seen 1 F50 in my life and it was at the show room at ferrari of houston around 9-10 years ago. THe Gawk factor on that car is amazing. It looks like nothing else on the road. THe odds of seeing an F50 on the road, let alone at all, are very small. The F50 also looks a lot wider and for me, wide and low is a must in a supercar or exotic.

Still love both and really hope I get the opportunity to own one. Don't think I will fit in an F40 so if at the right time there is an F50 at the right price, I will have to snap one up. Definitely a dream car of mine.

I love the F40 over the F50. The latter, I have not driven, but in my eyes, it looks big and not as inviting to drive.

To me the F40 is the high water mark of a simple mechanical car. The F50 is an early attempt at a car with electronics. The only big factor in favour of the F50 is that it is the last stick supercar Ferrari. In terms of electronics it cannot even be compared with the Enzo or the F70. I have thought many times about buying an F50 and have had many chances. Inspite of its' rarity it does not seem very hard to buy a Euro F50. I will likely give it a miss and wait for the F70. If I lived in the sunny parts of the US I might be tempted by an F50

The F50 is barely wider then the F40. Maybe it looks wider with the roof off?
    I saw a F40 next to a 599 and it was LOW!

Actually, the F50 is shorter in width by .1 of a inch. The F40 is 78.3 inches with the F50 at 78.2. The F50 is also shorter in height by .4 inches, but around 2 inches longer.
Both cars, thus, are pretty close in size.

Seems F50 and CGT is a popular pair for that reason

The only electronics of note in the F50 is the dash. If anything I would suggest that there was a conscious effort to leave it all up to the driver and there is no electronic assistance/interference in any functions. That is a huge positive in my books.

In fact it is one of the key drivers on why I purchased a F50.

The F50 is just as raw and road connected as the F40. In some ways, it is even more so. The visceral feel of the engine vibration and noise transmitted to the driver is distinctly louder than the F40. Braking is fantastic and body roll non existent.

I suspect if a few more folks drove the F50, there would be a lot of converts. Personally, i think the F50 will get its full credit in due course....great cars always do. :)

This was exactly my experience when I drove my neighbor's F50. I thought: "This is wonderful to drive... but it feels a bit more disconnected from the road than the sharp-edged F40"

I guess your opinion depends on which way the wind is blowing on any given day....:)
