I am building this for a fellow Fchatter and thought it would be fun to show the build as it progresses from start to finish. If he decides to chime in that's great but for now I will just illustrate my approach and any problems I run into along the way ;) You will be updaded every few days as the build moves towards completion.

    Subject: Ferrari 312T3 [early season]
    Scale: 1/24
Media: White Metal, Photo Etch, Cast Resin [brake ducts], Rubber [Tires]

The attached photos show the inventory of all parts, dry fit of major components and the case that has been created for this model [it will receive an appropriate "road surface" prior to completion]. The next step will be prepping the body parts for paint and build up of all sub assemblies. Next I will do a final dry fit prior to color coat on the body panels.

I don't have the funds as a college student to buy a MFH kit for myself, but any pictures I ever see of the kits always look great. Can't wait to see how this one turns out.

That is a really nice kit. I just finished the Ferrari 1968 312 Hiro. It did have
its problems, mainly with the tires. I did change the wheels, tires, engine heads,
exaust and body to do the 1967 Monaco Bandini car. I had planned on bringing it to the Ferrari Expo last April but could not finish it in time. These kits do take
alot of time to build correctly.

Just a quick update..not a lot to tell from last week...had some other things to finish up first but here is some progress. I am getting the "dirty" work out of the way first. Prepping and polishing the wings. As some of you may already know the best thing about white metal is the abilty to polish it to a near chrome finish. What you see in the pictures is the front wing that I have cleaned up the cast in detail first with a micro drill then sanded with a 600 grit w/d and followed by 1000 grit w/d. The initial sanding cuts down and removes the surface pitting. The second sanding removes the scratch marks left over and then I simply buff it out a few times with Novus fine scratch remover. Leaves a nice silky finish . Note the rear wing in the foreground prior to finish work. I prefer hand polishing vs use of a dremel. It has a much softer feel IMO.

Now that the "ice is broken" things will move swiftly ;)

Here are pictures of the final stages of my "dry fit" process. Everything should be pre fit prior to any major clean up or paint work. In these photos you will see how I progress thru this process. Also note the PE parts are pre fit as well and the crudeness of some of the white metal suspension parts...this is where a lot of time is spent either cleaning them up as good as possible or [depending on the client's budget] replacing them with steel rod as nessesary. I can now move onto surface prep, primer and base coat.

The progress on the model looks stunning and when i see the spoilers ready i really look forwards to the end result and seeing the model with the others of my collection (about 300 pieces build and about 60 kits still to be built)
At the moment i don't have pictures of my collection due to a new house we bought and we still wait for the keys so everything is packed in boxes but as soon everything is sorted out and i have them back on display i will post some pictures.

    Friendly greetings,

    Alex

Good question...it has a lot of surface pitting that would require some pretty aggresive sanding. I may use a very fine aluminum which has a nice contrast to the polished parts. The 126C2 I did a while back had the tub machined from aluminum...very nice. Take a look:

    Peter,

Just out of curiosity, is there an advantage to fitting the parts prior to cleaning? I find it easier
to 'clean' then 'fit' before I paint.

    Thanks,
    andre

I guess it's my preference. Even though the parts may appear to be well engineered a quick dry fit will reveal any flaws therefore any modifications, etc that need to be done. Then I can feel comfortable cleaning up and prepping the parts. It also gives you a better sense of what will be most visible so as not to waste too much effort on "hidden" parts.

when i was your age i did not have the financial for that even, but i am a little older now and some hard working sow now i can afford it and i am looking forwards to the end model, to get it here and to add it to my collection.

My collection is 1/24 (about 300 models, lost count but i know what i don't have and thats the most important)

Don't feel bad about it because me my self started with Tonka, Polestil and buraguo and was in your position, slowly slowly i changed my collection when i had the cash to Conti, Hiro , Renaicance, Tron, Mg , Tecnomodel, BBR, and what Alexander Lifka is building for me personally as well as this one PLM studio is making for me.

    friendly greetings,

    Alex

A quick correction and then a scratch coat of clear...still in a wet state. This will be sanded level, any additional touch up work performed, and a final coat of clear followed by a wet sand and polish.
