355 engine is out - question on timing belt

    Well, as Uconn Husky experienced, the process is taking longer than expected for me... I did pull the engine this past weekend and it went remarkably smooth. One of my jacks was only 16" high but it was not a problem to spin the engine 90 degrees and roll it out. A pic is below. The PDF from rifledriver was really good and the fact that my Spyder has the ECU's in the rear removed the step of threading the wiring through the firewall.

    Does anyone have steps for replacing the timing belts? I've got new belts and tensioners, the workshop manual is not very intuitive (at least for me). I'm wondering what needs to be removed to loosen things up and looking for a better explanation on proper tensioning. Thanks!

    Well the first thing you will want to do is to find Top Dead center for the #1 piston. Then mark the location of the cams, the belt, and the pulley. After you have found TDC and marked every thing then you can take the belts off.

    After you have put the new belts on be sure to time your cams so that you will know if your cam marks are accurate for future belt changes. A quick search of the archives ;) yielded these thread for the cam timing.

    One tip is the tensioner gap should be 2.5mm; before you remove anything slide a pin or wire through the hole into the tensioner piston rod (not sure if that's the official name) to hold position. I ended up having to take the whole tensioner off to compress it in a vice for reinstall.

    Also as Ernie said check timing before (and after) the belt change using a dial indicator.

    Yup that's the one I figured it was. RF128706 was nice enough to make a PDF with pictures of the removal process for the 355 guys. Here is the predecessor to that thread. http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=32653 The more information we have, the more it makes it easier for the next guy to do the work, and the better informed we all are. So if you come across something that you think would make the process easier, or found a part that is cheaper, or what ever, please share it for the benefit of the rest of the guys.

    I'm planning to use Fat Billy Bob's "Lobe Centerline" method when things go back together. Should save lots of time and hassle! Here's a link to his excellent writeup on using a dial indicator, and then using the lobe centerline method. HTH ;)
