What did you think of the foodstuffs? [Including, but, not limited to candy bars] For instance, in 2001, I consumed a variety of Candy Bars - courtesy of a cuddly Kiwi - I found a side-by-side comparison of Cadbury Bars to easily favor the Southerly version, as proper chocolate is used in your neck of the woods. Did you make a burrito upon your return to The Motherland? What say ye?
I found that American diet/taste is more interested in quantity rather than quality. The ONLY decent meals i had in USA was at Ruths Stakehouse & @ my *host* family from deep south Mississippi Ms. [real wonderful people from that neck of the woods] put on a great BBQ, BUT no beer allowed, a DRY COUNTY, WTF was that all about? In-n-Out burger was ok, esp. all the bible scripts in the bottom of the cups and secret order codes, again WTF is all that about? Still, i love your country and the people too, very friendly down to earth race. God Bless America! Ciao M
Great food in New York restaurants but otherwise... I have several good friends in the US, all of whom I met overseas, and they all lament the poor quality of the average foodstuffs ie candy, cookies, cereals, pasta, etc and I can only say I can see why. What also shocked me in 2000 was that in a big cosmopolitan city like Orlando Fl was how hard it was to buy 'exotic' ingredients like Thai fish sauce, fresh coriander and the like. Another friend in SF took me to the local Farmer's Market down on the wharf and we bought fabulous produce there BUT it was US$8 for 3 big tomatoes in 2000! BTW, for any real coffee drinkers, I discovered you can get a reasonable approximation of a cappucino at Starbucks by ordering a double shot macchiato! I'm afraid if you just want a proper 'caffe' you're out of luck.
kerrari - Farmer's Markets are ironically, pricier venues for fresh stuff, particularly if it's an exotic tomato. Best I ever had was a Russian Purple - tasted as if the best tomato one could find had properly been salted already. Extremely hard to find, sells out within hours, available one day in Farmer's Market... Annually. Probably not much of an Asian contingent in Orlando - still unusual a decent store wouldn't carry it. Even hick towns in Western US have basic staples for Int'l taste buds. Starbucks blows. We make our own Cappucino. _______ MPMP - I really want to know about your down-home meals in MS... recipes if you got 'em! In-n-Out is owned by bible thumpers, who share fresh ingredients and aforementioned thumpin' as if they were interchangeable gospel. You got "The works" aye? _______ Aircon - whereabouts is "there"? _______ Each of you is right, unfortunately, about quantity over quality in the land'o'plenty. It's as if the US is a theme park of chewables. To open USA'n eyes; maybe it's best to write about what an average Aussie restaurant serves, and how it is, in comparison, a US Ruth's Chris Steakhouse could be only decent fare on one's travels Stateside. _______ [355] - Do tell! I only mentioned Cadbury Bars, but, that's not really accurate, as other treats you're familiar with had less of a typical US Candy Bars' inners. Rather than a "meaty" chew one wolfs down, the wax household found more wafer, layered caramel, wrapped in delectable coating, was to be savored.
hehe, i admittedly have not yet been to the good ol US of A my knowledge of American treats is a result of watching movies/tv, where the token fat kid always seems to have a box of twinkies in hand!
Come to America come to America (uncle Sam on a soap box) WHERE our Bees produce honey and Jesus looks at him and said "Yea and were your flys eat ****" from the movie 'O Holy Moutain"
a number of places that were regarded as "up market" in LA, SF, Seattle and Atlanta, Phoenix...and...i forget where else....oh...Vancouver..that's America to us is that vague enough for you?
Been there a few times, food and grog generally a lot more expensive. How they call that Panther Piss (Budweisser) a beer I'll never know. Found the north west, Seattle area countryside very pretty, and lovely lovely people, great friends in L.A. Sacremento, and Seattle. Be careful when you speak to people that you translate from Australian to American. A rubber is an eraser, a clerk is not a clock, Gas is for the fuel tank, not from your arse, your trunk is not your.............. it's the boot, where you put your bags in the car, and when they say " they'll be rooting for you", just explain you'll do the same for them and why, and watch their reaction. The side walk is the footpath, and when you cross the street forget what your mother drummed into you, look to the RIGHT and then to the LEFT and to the RIGHT again, that will probably get you killed. There is a big Retail store chain in B.C.Canada called "Roots" just image what the adds for that would be like if they opened here- with Roy and HG? Oh and if you don't go to the drivers side of the car, just once when someone picks you up, or you get a cab I'll be disapointed. And if they say their got to spank someone on the FANNY, just relax it is IS your arse. Fanny spanking- Jesus! If you can keep that in mind, the things we hold true and our way of life here runs an parrallel. Cheers MG
There are some great food experiences to be had in USA and many contrasts across the country. But you gotta go there and explore locally. If you go to Pennsylvania there are lots of German-inspired foods and the Italian-inspired but unique Philly Hoagies! There are great delis in NY and San Francisco. Chille dips and Dos Eces! Great Mexican in LA and San Diego. Some good wines to drink - Zinfandel reds from Napa and Oregon. Southern grits are great if done just right. Cajun cooking in Louisiana. Americans seem to always served too much - the land of plenty - but sometimes you can quality as well. Good eating!
near Boston is a joint that specialises in clam chowder in a large bread roll, brilliant Texas has a chilli Con Carne that is great if you like hot and spicy NY restaurant on 84th street I had the best meal in my life SF have many restaurants that serve up some of the best surf'n'turfs on the planet People in the south were very polite , NYers were your typical large city types but not overly obnoxious, LA is great but there are definitely some dangerous parts of it and hard to find good quality food there but most definitely has got the quantity. I feel sorry for you guys with yur health "system", my boy got sick while we were there and even with all the insurance we took out they refused to see him ... even when I offered to pay cash !! The pharmacists OTOH helped us enormously and got the little bugger well with drugs
he probably picked something up from the plane trip but with a doting mum it was a full on "plague" and nothing was too good for her little boy ... whatever happened to letting kid's immune system develop so they can fight these things off naturally ??
did you see the episode on SBS the other night where they were trying to find the best health system in the world ? UK, Japan and Switzerland were held up as examples of good health systems and the US as a shocker, but that was the point of the documentary, done by PBS I think
Hi Moretti, Yeah, I forgot about the New England clam chowder and they also have the best lobsters, bar none, up that way too, and cheap. Went to a place in New Hampshire where you selected your lobster out of a huge aerated tank and when all cooked up it came with clam chowder and bread, all for about $10 or so - a few years ago maybe, but it was still cheap. Had a view across the water to the Three Mile Island nuclear plant, which may have explained the number of tails a lot of the lobsters had.
Con't And don't forget the great unknown [keep it quiet] Put In Bay, South Bass Island, Ohio. U zoom across on Aussie built ferry, aka Jet Express GREAT party place, full on, beeds4boobs, Mike MadDog Adams playing @ the RoundHouseBar, Golf Carts to do "development work" with, parties on boats, HUGE BBQ chickens, Heinemans winery, beer barrel saloon [worlds longest bar], friendly locals and girls etc etc THE LOT. I NEVER go to USA without paying a visit. Summer only, lake freezes in winter![fall] GOD BLESS AMERICA & P.I.B! Ciao M
What about Morro bay on the California coast between L.A and Frisco( coastal fishing village) I had battered scalopes.
I prefer House, bloody unbelievable that they could spend so much time and resources on one patient, imagine the bill from that !! How's your car going Gleggy ? polished the towbar and filtered the air in the tyres ?? you concour nutcases really should get out more often
