Who knew obtaining these would be so difficult? Apparently, they are like Aztec gold....or maybe (this is just a hunch), this world is full of some incredibly stupid people.

ANYWAY, I read somewhere that Volvo valve shims are the same as those used by Ferrari. Is this true? I HAVE to get my car back together this weekend and I'm sitting here with no valve shims on a Friday night thanks to dealing with stupid f&%$ idiots. Please someone tell me that I can use Volvo shims. I'm leaving next week for a month in the mountains of Montana and Wyoming. I HAVE to get my car put back together and out of my friends garage before I leave.

Anyone want to save the lives of some people in Arizona and in Georgia? Because I really think I may have to make a couple of stops on my way to Montana to bash the brains in of a few people who obviously don't need brains if I don't have f&#%ing shims in my hands by tomorrow.

Someone step up and save a few lives. Anyone?

    Richard,

The shims used in all the 4-valve cars are indeed the same diameter as used by Volvo. However, in 25 years of servicing these cars, I've never had any issues in locating replacement shims. Although I have a master shim kit for both the 2V and 4V cars, I purchase replacment shims on a regular basis. (Personally, I never re-use/swap shims.)

Regarding your parts experiences with the two companies you've mentioned, by location. I won't ever waste my time again with those clowns...and the folks in Georgia; well, for the most part service is good, but when they drop the ball, it's usually weeks to get things sorted out and the correct parts in hand.

    So, here are some options:
    -1) Try you Volvo dealer

-2) PM me tomorrow with the sizes you need. Presuming I have them, I'll Priority Mail them to you...You should see them Monday/Tuesday.

    -3) Contact: Scott at
    A&W Autoparts, 52 State Route 35 S
    Eatontown, NJ , 07724-3452
    Phone: 732-542-5600
    FAX: 732-542-6050

These guys at A&W get it. They have great prices and excellent, consistent service.

    Regards,
    David

Unfortunately, I have to get it done this weekend. So, off to Volvo tomorrow morning. If that doesn't work out, then sometime in late July I'll finish it up. My buddy has been gracious enough to help with his superior automechanical wisdom and more importantly his air conditioned garage. But he'll be taking delivery of a Ford GT in the next few weeks and I'd really like to have my car out of his hair by then.

I called Arizona idiot on Monday and ordered the shims I needed and said to ship them UPS 3 day select. After not receiving them yesterday, I called said idiot today and asked where they were. Apparently, they never shipped them and spent most of the day avoiding my phone calls.

So...on to Georgia idiot. Ordered the shims, asked for FEDEX overnight. Said I need them Saturday morning. Idiot said, "Saturday morning delivery, OK. You'll have them in the morning." I get an email with a tracking number....from UPS Next Day Air....which as every dipsh!t knows, doesn't deliver on Saturdays. So I won't get them until Monday. WTF?

I mean, I live in Alabama. I'm used to you-gotta-pretty-mouth inbred stupid. I deal with it every day. But is it a national epidemic? Are retards ruling the Earth?

Someone please kill me. Kill me now.

Good luck at Volvo. For some reasons, I believe they only have the 2V shims that are bigger than the 4V 328 shims.

Are you positive; I thought the Volvo shims only worked on the 2V 308s?

OK, now my UPS tracking is saying they will be here in the morning. Although, I've never seen UPS deliver on Saturdays except to commercial addresses and for a significant fee. We'll see. I stand to retract my rant against idiot number 2, but I'm still skeptical.

Idiot number 1 is still removed from the purchase list.

It seems that what I remember reading was the Volvo shims were only for the 2 valve cars, but I'll give it a try in the morning as a back up plan.

Possible old age, coupled with brain fade. I frequently confuse the two, versus four valve Volvo shim substitution issue....I appologize.

Secondly, I was not referring to Ricambi as "the vendor in Georgia." My limited experiences with them have been nothing but outstanding, although their pricing is sometimes a bit high. There's another F-car parts pedler down in that neck of the woods...

I will say that Ricambi's on-line tracking of orders enables me to keep my client's very happy, as we both can commit to a date for service, or completition of services rendered.

Best of luck getting your car back together...I know how frustrating it can be being hung for parts!!

    Regards,
    David

2V 308 shims certainly are the same size as older Volvo shims. But when Ferrari went 4-valve I'm assuming the shims got smaller in diameter. But guess what? Volvo also went 4-valve and their shims got smaller in diameter also. I don't know that they are the same as Ferrari, but it is worth a try. A lot of euro cars share these shim kits.

Yes, I was not referring to Ricambi as the Georgia vendor. Ricambi is in North Carolina, and I've had nothing but great service and great parts (at a premium price) from Daniel. I'll just bite the bullet and pay the premium from now on.

However, the shims just arrived. So I'm in business and I retract my rant against the Georgia vendor. I asked for FEDEX, but hey, if they knew UPS could get the job done then fine.

It's gonna be a long weekend getting everything back together, plus squeezing in training for my mountaineering trip to Montana/Wyoming.

    Thanks for the support guys.

Volvo, Fiat, Lancia, and I believe 2V 308 uses the same shims.

I have a valve shim kit for Volvo, Fiat/Lancia, but it will not work

for my 308 QV cause the QV"s uses a smaller diameter shims.

Yes, please, I would be interested to know, too. I've always heard that the Volvo shims were for the 2V, but if anyone finds an alternative, please let us know!
    Thanks

My shims actually arrived Saturday morning via UPS Saturday Delivery, which cost a pretty penny. Maybe I should bill the a-holes in Arizona for that. So the Ferrari gods paid me back for ranting on the Georgia vendor. My friend dropped a nut in the head and it went down one of the oil ducts to the crank. I have an oil pan gasket anyway, but we drained the oil and used a magnet to fish it out. That was a stressful hour while we debated what to do. Thankfully we got it out through the drain hole.

Good point, my 4-valve Volvo is hydraulic. BUT, the Volvo shop where I bought my 308 shims had two different sizes, so I'm not sure if all 4-valves were hydraulic or not. Volvo certainly used two different sizes of shims, and one of them is smaller that the 308 shims.

Could be usefull as information anyways...

I'll check the dimensions of the chims for the old B21/210 and B23/230 engines and post it here in a day or two.
Could be helpfull comparing with Ferrari chims, both 2 and 4 valves.

    Ok gents.
According to my brother who is more into Volvo cars than anybody else I know, Volvo only made a handful of 16V heads without hydraulic lifters, only for racing purpose.
Those were made for the B19 engine (Volvo 360), I believe the shims for those are more expensive than the ones for the F cars, if possible to find.
That means, the 2V shims are the only shims from Volvo that can be used to replace the shims on a 308 with 2V heads.

A pic. of my brothers Volvo 240.
~400hp, all parts are from a Gr A racing car

    Hey Guys

Car parts dealers will supply shims when you give them the OD + thickness
I want to adjust the valve clearance on my Mondial 3200
Can someone measure the shims OD of the 4V
    and let me know

    Thanks
