I thought I read ferrari's plan is to focus on weight reduction and not focus on HP

I just saw this amazing video on the Porsche website. They did a really excellent job on the video.

Do you think Ferrari will adapt dual-clutch technology to their V8 car in the Future? I wonder how much weight it adds to the 911.

the weight issue is what the engineers have been working on continually... this gearbox technology will be the future of high end sports cars imo

I may be wrong, but isn't Ferrari already using Cual clutch technology on the new California? I'd say its a no brainer that it will be used on the 430 replacement.

If you have the opportunity drive a Scuderia as I have, you will know why they should keep it as it is - incredible - just incredible - shifting!

wonder how there ever gonna keep our interest at this rate with 60 millisecond shifts... we can't even use all this power on normal roads and that's where 95% of these machines will be used.

wonder how fast cars will go in 30 years, 300? 400? flying machines?

Ther F430 does indeed use a dual clutch plate assembly already. This was supposed to reduce the premature wear on the clutch that the 360 had problems with.

They're not talking about a dual clutch plate, which has nothing to do with a dual-clutch gearbox. A dual-clutch gearbox actually utilizes two separate clutches on two separate input shafts for nearly seamless
and instant shifts. It's the wave of the future and one all sports car manufacturers must ride to keep up.

Dual clutch has nothing whatsoever to do with top speed...

+1. My new Evo X SST has dual clutch and it is simply fantastic. I bought the GTI with DSG when it first came out just to play with it. It was light years ahead of anything at the time. Has anyone heard that GT-R is burning up transmissions? A few people in Hong Kong want to order GT-R's with manual because they have lost faith in the GT-R's dual clutch transmission

one simple question: does dual-clutch offer faster shifting speed compare to the F1 (360/430)?

Here is a link with information on dual-clutch / direct-shift gearboxes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Direct-Shift_Gearbox. Claimed fastest shift time is 8 milliseconds!

I know that getting ultra quick shifts is the aim here but maybe there is more to the story. What I mean is that I LOVE the way my 430 shifts! I like that it feels exactly like a manual to me minus the foot clutch. It feels......natural. I have driven plenty of DSG tranny cars and I do appreciate the ultra quick shifting but it also lack some feel. I love driving manual cars and just picked up a 997 Turbo with a 6 speed. There is something pure and raw about the 3 pedal experience. The F1 in the 430 gives me a lot of that but with the added benefit of doing a better job of shifting than I could ever do on my own. I am curious to drive the new California Ferrari to see how Ferrari approaches the dual clutch world.

That is completely different and not what this topic is about. Cars have used multi-plate clutches for a long time.
These new cars have 2 separate clutches. One disengages, and the other engages already in the next gear.

Yes. You can buy a VW GTI with a dual clutch transmission, or a "DSG"(Direct Shift Gearbox), that shifts faster.

    Not in GT-R case,

"The toggle on the left controls the twin-clutch paddle-operated 6-speed manual transmission. In the Normal setting, the transmission delivers shifts at the pace of a good torque-converter automatic, or 400-millisecond shifts when you tug on the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Flick the toggle upward to illuminate the red R light, and the transmission delivers 200-millisecond paddle shifts."

    A 430 shifts in 150ms and Scuderia as we already know,in 60ms.

that 'feel' is exactly why ferrari has reportedly programmed in some 'snap' in the new tranny of the California. otherwise the sensation is too sterile, supposedly.

True, but the dual clutch set-up is still accelerating the car during most of that 200 millisecond gear change (the time it takes from pulling the paddle to accelerating in the new gear). After requesting the up-shift, the clutch for the current gear remains engaged (and acccelerating the car) while the next higher gear is selected, then power is quickly transfered from one clutch to the other. One clutch handles the odd gears, the other clutch the even gears.

An F1 equipped car coasts while shifting (similar to shifting a regular manual). Of course, the Scuderia's F1 is so fast the car doesn't coast very long.
