Why would you guys spend $1,500+ on something just to surf the internet and use microsoft office? Seriously........... http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=14051 http://youtube.com/watch?v=cy3uSo5RgBM or even the Eee 700 $399. This is what I'm posting from. I carry it around campus on my backpack. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220321
I run all my Engineering software on this puppy. I use HYSIS, Matlab, office 07' and have never had a problem. Not only is this Eee PC a workhorse... there is nothing out there more portable! And this is what I thought this thread was about... a portable working laptop. This thing sees MUCH more real 'work' than my desktop setup with a qx9650 cpu / 9800GTX gpu. The Eee PC is considered to be the best ultra portable buy out there by most publications. And not one other person had mentioned in on this thread. Now if you can't get off your high horse and buy a 'budget' PC, that's another story. Get a Dell. Dell sounds 'up your alley'.
Dude, chill out. <---- makes it all better. I like the Eee and almost bought one for around the house, but the 7-inch screen is little small for us older types to look at all day. The 13.3" screen on the 1310 is the smallest I would want to go on something I had to use all day. Also, I can support myself very nicely, but when Dale has a problem, who does he call? Will Asus cross-ship a replacement to him so he can keep working (and billing)? Didn't think so. Just like using Parallels on the Mac - the Eee is fine for you and me, but it does not fit Dale's needs. He was looking for something small and light, which I did not take to mean a subnotebook.
http://www.dell.com/content/products/category.aspx/vostronb?~ck=anav&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04 Link for the Vostro (aka Dell Business) laptops. Same components as the Inspiron notebooks except made better and with better coverage/help.
I really like my Macbook air. I am still more comfortable with the Windows OS, but learning a little every day.
And you get some overheating issues...don't know if those have been fixed or not. http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/30/macbook-air-users-still-faced-with-overheating-problems/ I have a Thinkpad now, but will likely be buying a Mac notebook on my next go 'round. RMX
I liked the Sony Viao TZ series. They even have a Carbon Fiber shell. I believe that was an 11" screen though. ASUS has 24/7 service and tech support. 1 888 678 3688
Maybe take a peek at a Flybook, and try to score the out of production model V33. www.flybook.com They are quite affordable here in Europe nowadays.... i.e. 900 Euros.
Do NOT get a Macbook Air. They are a complete and utter waste of money, and very flimsy. Why bother with an Air, when you could get a simple Macbook for far cheaper?
Strongly disagree! IMO, it's one of the most "solid" feeling laptops out there. It all depends on whether the 2lb weight difference is significant to you. [3.0lb versus 5.0+ for the Mac Book] Having said that, it's not the machine for me as my laptop (a 17" Mac Book Pro) is my only computer and the Air is really designed to live on a wifi network with at least one other machine (PC or MAC) acting as it's "mother". [Full disclosure: I do actually have two peesees as well, but I haven't turned 'em on in at least six months.] As always, just my 02c, Cheers, Ian
voodoopc just launched a new lightweight machine that is so incredible. carbon fiber chassis. 3.3 lbs. Has ethernet and removable battery (not very common for this type of laptop) very sexy to and decent price to 2100 not bad at all.
voodoopc are none where near cheap! They are amazing, high end just as Falcon Northwest, which is one of the most expensive and graphics dedicated computer brand. I will recommend you ThinkPads. They do their work and are relatively cheap. Starting at 2.5lbs you should take a look.Plus the Battery outperforms..I think 7 hours with the large cell. http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087¤t-category-id=135A781CA29B4ECB9ADAD8E72CF6FD61 I own the X61 and X61s and the computers works like a charm.I cant see anything wrong besides the screen is not a glossy display, and i am fan of glossy not matte.Bt they are great.Another one for the lightweight that is a slowww but beautiful laptop its a Sony Vaio TZ http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&categoryId=8198552921644507782&parentCategoryId=16154 I have one of those too.Price in comparison for the IBM is 1000+.The Vaio performance sucks!,but the looks and display are also nice. Again get a ThinkPad X Series for 1000, its one of the cheapest, good price per value Lightweight laptops. EDIT: I am an Apple fan,i have seen the MacBook Air and consider it to look cheap. Its really thin thats a pros but its larger than my Vaio and Lenovo. So it is still bulky in that matter.
+1 Thinkpads have GREAT build quality. Only thing that really ticked me off was that Lenovo installed 48 of their programs and services in the autostart. Totally insane.
I loved my T series Thinkpad so I bought an X61t for $2100. It does not feel as sturdy as the T. I dropped it from about 3 feet off the ground and now the LCD latch is broken as well as the brackets that hold the battery in place. It is being sent back to Lenovo for repairs (under warranty)
Oh Guys you alll need the Acer Ferrari 1000 ist only 4.4 pounds http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3680291&CatId=1902
No no that thing is a brick and expensive for what it delivers.ThinkPads $1000 2.5 pounds. ----> Way to go. Real F guys don't use Ferrari laptops, instead they drive Ferarris. (except Tarek)
