Nice basses. My brother just put together a P-bass using a '72 body that he had laying around. Found a solid neck on eBay, turned out really nice. He has a nice ESP 5-string but wanted a P for the blues band he's playing in now. I'm looking around for a P body that's been converted to P-J style pickups. I have a cheapo Samick 5-string with this setup and like it a lot. There's a lot of versatility with the tone.

Update time. Sorry for the crappy iphone pic, but it is all I have at the moment.

This is my craigslist find from last weekend. It's a 1985 MIJ '62 Reissue Fender Telecaster. Bought it with a 15w amp and hardshell case for 100 bucks. =D I didn't need the amp but it was included in the deal. It has a few issues with it - some scuffs, some cracks on the back and near the input jack, and the bridge pickup isn't working at the moment. I'll probably swap out the pickups for a Texas Tele setup.

It took me 2,000 posts to find this thread, but it was worth the wait. Some awesome taste on this board, gents! That Dumble replica sounds amazing.

Just a little background on me: I consider myself a fairly crappy guitarist - but people who don't know music think I'm good at it. That probably tells you where I sit talent-wise: I know the pentatonics and that's about it! I like all sorts of music but to play it is mostly singer-songwriter stuff from various eras: Hendrix, Beatles, Live, Tragically Hip, Counting Crows, James Taylor on the quiet moments. SRV is my all-time favourite guitarist but I love many, many more.

In recent years I've concentrated on extending my collection with some quality acoustic guitars. I had a D-42 made especially for me (first photo, with my sig on the fret board) in the Martin factory in 2006, and then flew across the pond to NYC and drove to Nazareth, PA to pick it up. During that trip I also picked up a very special Martin OM-42 Quilted Maple II (#15 of 30 built), which guitarist El McMeen used to record an entire CD with. That thing sounds just as amazing as it looks (see photo 2). Apart from that, a redwood/rosewood Avalon L25c (aka Lowden, photo 3) that sounds fantastic, and a 12 string Martin.

Now that I'm happy I've got some tonal variety on the acoustic side (although I still want a slothead small body), I've started concentrating on the electrics. I've got a fantastic Fender Strat Deluxe, the 50th Anniversary version: I love that guitar. My Blade Texas Special is also a great Strat - it was my first decent guitar. I've got an old jazz box from the '60ies - a Yamaha ES-175 copy, that doesn't see much action as I'm too untalented to play jazz - unfortunately (despite my forum name!). How I would love to play like Kenny Burrell!

Amp-wise: I recently bought a THD Univalve second-hand with a THD cab and love it! I've also got a Vox Valvetronix that I like for it's versatility.

Next project for this summer: either a Gibson CS-336, or an awesome Les Paul with '60ies neck and tiger-stripe maple AAA top! Always wanted one of those. After that, I still need an SG and a Tele. You can see I'm collecting all the classic designs!

    Peace,

Very cool indeed. We were there just after the museum opened (April '06), and that museum is fantastic. The factory tour was awesome as well. We managed to video most of it because both us and the guide were not aware that was not allowed. Other than that factory, though, Nazareth is a pretty dead town! If you're that close to the factory, have you ever been to NazFest? It's on the 4th of August this year, I think, and sounds like a great guitar party!

It was a great trip on other fronts as well BTW - saw David Gilmour in Radio City Music Hall and Yo-Yo Ma in Carnegie Hall!!! Just mind boggling.

Thanks for all the compliments - I'm very chuffed with these babies myself. Too bad I only see them for 2 weeks every 2 - 3 months... Just like my Ferrari.... :(

So, I played a short acoustic set for the dedication of a Habitat for Humanity house on Sunday evening. Took my Collings OM1. AWESOME GUITAR!

When I got home I got my wheelchair out of the car, get seated, grabbed my Collings (in its hard shell case of course), set it on my "briefcase holder" forks on the front of my chair, opened the front door, pushed through the door, reached behind me to close the door, and the case tipped forward and fell to the ground nearly hitting the dog and hitting the ground with a terrifying force and sound.

I opened the case and to my HORROR it has broken the head nearly clean off the guitar! OMG! I am still in shock over this!

Next week I will be making my regular trip to Dripping Springs (southwest of Austin) for work and will pass right by Bills new (and AWESOME) shop and drop it off and just hope they can fix it sooner rather than later and at a reasonable cost to me! This SUCKS! I hope it does not ruin the sound of this guitar because it is SWEET! Of course I should not fret (pun intended) since that is exactly how Bill got his start...repairing vintage guitars!

Send some good karma my way guys I need it...I guess I should just be thankful that I live in Austin and pass by Collings every three weeks or so!

    Michael,

Is that a Jalpa I see behind one of your guitars?! What a cool car...I was always a big fan of that car!

    Love the guitars too!

A buddy of mine has a Mustang, but when we were in high school we stripped it and painted it. =/ I'm sure it is devalued but I wonder what can be done to undo it and redo it right. Probably not worth it. Amazing what they go for these days.

Nice picture of Jeff Berlin and Billy Sheehan!

Also, dig the double neck. Quite... uncommon and rare indeed.

the mustang is my fave. Bought it from an old country player in the early 80's. The case and guitar still smell of stale cigs and booze from the years of playing in dive bars.

The Jeff/Billy pic is a hold over from my rock and roll days. Two great bassists in one shot.

The double neck is a one off. Specially made at the Fender Custom shop. Its pretty cool, a little neck heavy, but still cool.

    more pics to come.

Do we have a Modern Guitar thread or is it just kind of one thread for all guitars really???

My favorite current guitar builder is Kevin L. Pederson. He is a heck of a craftsman, artist, luthier. I have three of his guitars and will get and arch top from him eventually. If you have a favorite wood, pick up, bridge, etc. etc. and could never find one from a manufacturer built that way, give him a call or an email, he can build ANYTHING! He is also one of the few guitar builders who actually does HIS OWN inlay work! Most makers send that out...

He used to be called abyss guitars, here is the link and tell Kevin that I sent you!

James, thanks for the link. Very impressive guitars.I doubt the headstock repair will affect the tone. I love Collings acoustics. Absolutely my favorites.

Talked to the Collings folks and they said bring it out whenever I want and they would take a look at it and regardless of how bad it is they can fix it...just a matter of how much will be needed to do so. Turn around is about 2 months... Sounds pretty good to me. Not sure I want to know the cost, but at least I will get my baby back just like new! YEA!

Give Kevin a call sometime if you are in the mood for a custom guitar. The guy can freaking build a guitar! The wood he gets is amazing (head out of the gutter guys...I know you all TO WELL!) The guy is a player too! I have seen him rip up some pretty good licks let me tell you...he is WAY better than me...but I suck so that is not saying much! LOL!

I'll have to post some pics of my larger ones. Those are tiny.

Remember when the "D" engine was the big dog? No more. I'm licensed to fly up to small "M" engines. Once I pass my next certification I can fly up to "O" and small "P" engines. any bigger than that and the Defense Dept. takes an interest in you. :D

Here is one with my other musical vice... my trombone, with a larger rocket in the background. Its about 6 foot tall, the rocket that is, and has been up over a mile on a "K" motor. Good flying rocket. Currently getting stretched a little so I can fly her on larger "K"s.

nevermind the Peter Gallagher photo and movie poster... a hold over from my hollywood days.

I'll have to start a rocketry thread :D

It's the annual get-together of the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum (www.umgf.com), organised in conjunction with the factory. Chris Martin IV is always there as well. Great forum if you like Martins, I've made a lot of friends there and if it wasn't for that forum I'd never have owned that OM-42!

EC308 - that 00-45 1902 is amazing. You need sunglasses!

Very sorry to hear about your Collings, James. They are breathtaking guitars and I think they did a lot of good for the quality in Martins and other manufacturers in recent years. I've yet to play one, though. I guess you're lucky you're based in Austin - it's a bit more of a problem if I'd break my Martin in Holland. Although, thinking about it, it would give me an excuse to visit the US again and pick up some more nice guitars. :)

Thanks guys for the well wishes w/ the Collings! Can't tell you have glad I am it was that guitar vs. one of my Abyss guitars! In fact I am heading down to the new Collings factory tomorrow for a short tour and to drop off the guitar with them for repair. They said it will take about 2 months or so! I feel very good about letting the very builders rebuild their own guitar! Not to mention Bill got his start repairing the Martin and Gibson's of yore there were owned by music stars and pro's! If anyone can bring it back to 100% it is Bill Collings and his company!

    Will keep you posted guys!

On the Rocket front, I don't even know what the engines beyond "D" are!? I thought the D's were pretty WILD (had one 3 stage D...you couldn't even see that bad boy when it took off)! I think you could start a rocketry thread.
