Hello to all of you 355 ladies and gents. I want to buy a 355, I am very lucky and already have a 550, but I saw a 1996 355 the other day 16 k miles, all mechanical services done in the last 200 miles, new clutch, new belts, great (i think) ac, but a little tired dash, and sticky areas. All standard non tubi, just a good driver standard car.

I have a good feeling about the car, however I would welcome advice on things of course to look for, and an idea on prices. As I say this is a good driving car, not perfect which is fine as I like driving myself.
    Any help gratefully received.
    many thanks in advance

    Piers

You can find here all kind of parts for repair. If the mechanical of the car are excellent then don't worry about little things like dash shrinkage or sticky buttons. You will be able to fix all and make your car perfect in and out. I don't know why everybody is so impressed with the Tubi. No exhaust system sounds better then factory on the F355. There is no power gain either going with tubi so don't even look for that in 355. Another suggestion: If you already have 550 then by the F355 spider. you can get great deals right now. I think that in the next 5 - 10 years the spiders are going to appreciate in value only about 2700 where produced for the whole world. The only thing I would recommend on a spider is when you do the oil change service always have the mechanic check the oil level for the power top. Allot of spider owners are complaining about the spider because the power top, I was one of those. I spoke to a Ferrari mechanic about after he fixed it. He said that the oil level for the power top should be checked at every engine oil change service (once a year) and the power top will never fail.

    Hope you buy one soon.

Congratulations on starting your search for a 355, being a 550 owner you will have more insight into this search than a non Ferrari owner. :)

As Pap mentioned there are many good threads regarding all the details to check for when looking at a 355, the most important detail is to get a good PPI done by an experienced 355 tech, someone who knows the 355 inside out. ;)

I hope you find a good 355 and put plenty of miles on her. You will become addicted to the sound near red line. ;)

    Welcome to the board! :)

Thanks for the advice, I looked at 2 spiders and both had problems with the raising and I guess lowering of the tops, but I have to say I prefer the coupes. all the best, Piers

I saw there was a bunch of info, but always better to chat about these things rather than just read the bulletin board, you never know what comes out of the conversation..

Actually what made me look was an event in Houston, where my 550 blew a hose, and the one guy with the 355 was having so much fun and the noise too. I know the 355 are not the quickest, but certainly look like the most fun, and having tried the 360 and the 430 (different financial regime completely) the 355 looked like the deal. Is your experience all good?

Does anyone have a feel for current pricing?

I see all the cars on ebay with what seem to be unrealistic pricing, maybe the cars too, but what about real world pricing in today's market?

I bought my 97 F355 Spider for $63K. It has some issues with smog and the top though. It also is due for a major. So I'm guessing it needs between $10K and $15K of work over the next year. With that said, I think $75K would be a good price for a car that has had a recent major and has no significant defects. Looking at what's out there, this seems to be the going rate. Although it will probably drop as time goes on due to the economy.

Yes and no, I had a 355F1 Berlinetta, this was not a good car, I traded it on my F355 Spider and this has been basically trouble free, i have headers to do at the moment, they have just started to leak after a track day. These are not a drama like they can be made to look here, just replace them and its sorted. My roof has been sweet, i use the roof all the time and i think it likes the exercise. That really is the key to these cars as I'm sure you are aware, if we use them they reward us by being less trouble then something that is left in the corner and taken out a whipped once in a while.

All in all my experience with the 355 has been awesome, i have put 16000kms on my cars in under a year! I brought it to drive! My advice is find a car you like, where you are there is much more choice than where i am, make sure you are happy with the condition (good PPI) and go driving.

Best of luck with the search mate. :)

Lot’s of info on this subject. If interested, do a search. It is in most cases a relatively easy fix.
Once sorted, raise and lower at least once a month. ( IIRC )
