quick question for you guys... i have a Nikon D200 with the VR18-200mm lens. while its great for an all rounder lens. i was looking for something at one end of the scale.
i'm looking for a lens i can get some wide angle shots 10-12mm or something like that... and would this same lens be good for close up work. i want the lens to be good, but under 6-700 would be nice... what should i be looking at?

i will be using it for automotive work aswell as landscape and some close up work of random objects

    I don't know Nikon's lineup, but I have a couple of comments.

    1) With a 10-12mm lens, you'll get a lot of image distortion, particularly at the edges. Is that the look you are going for?
    2) If by up-close work you mean a couple of feet away, then yes. Wide lenses are sometimes able to focus even as close as 1 foot or so. If you mean macro, then no. These lenses aren't designed to magnify that much. I think the traditional definition of macro is at least 1:1 (that is, the image projected on the film/sensor object is at least as large as the object being photographed). That required specialized lenses.

You have 2 choices for around that price. Keep in mind that you won't be able to get 12mm in 35mm equivalent. You will get eihter 16 or 18mm in 35 equivalent. Right now you have 27-300mm in 35 equivalent.
The 12-24mm f/4 in about $900. The 10.5mm fisheye will give you 16mm equivalent, but you have to have a special program to "de-fish" it. Other brands make wide angles for Nikon mounts, but I only use Nikon lenses.
    Thanks

I use Canon and not sure if they have these type of lenses for Nikon but for car photography good lenses are the 16-35mm and 17-40mm from "Canon". Also i use a 17-85mm for everything which is a good lens too.

Sigma 10-20mm was a great lens for me. It was around $450 off of Amazon, too.

sorry if i contradicted myself in my question, im more of a user than knowing what i need.
pretty much this is what i'll be photographing and maybe this might help more.

    cars - photoshoot (1m/3ft - 10m/30ft)
    cars - race track (10m/30ft - infinity)
landscape - panoramic shots - but i can seem together several shots (areas of 100m+/300ft)
closeup - i think you might be right with macro, maybe we can forget this one for now.

i guess i jsut want a lens where i can be close to something (like a car) and get it all in (larger field of view) i can correct distortion and fisheyeing with software later.

Yes ML84, Nikon has a 17-35 2.8, and the 16-85 3.5-5.6. Do you still have your Rebel XT?
    Thanks

My 5D and 50 f/1.2L finally came in! As if the wait for the UPS truck wasn't enough, the battery must now charge. Here is a horribly crappy pic of right after I got everything out of their boxes. (taken with phone+shaky hand)

^^ You won't have that shaky hand problem with f/1.2.

Nice glass. I haven't had a chance to use anything quite that wide. The 50mm f/1.4 is nice, though.

Most likely, my next will be the the 24-70 f/2.8L.

    Red ring of fun:p

I'm experiencing the terrible wait for UPS right now...

I won't mind waiting for the battery though.

Well since I am like the only Nikon user left on this site(and proud of it) I will help you. D50 to D200 is a good step up. The D50 is today's D40 and D200 today's D300. You would be going up two levels in the Nikon system. From D50 skipping the D80 to the D200. D200 body new is $1000, the grip I am pretty sure is like $150. Even if it has 10k on it, it is still only 2/3 the price. If the camera looks good, everything works, I would say go for it. Personally I went with the D80 rather than the D200 for of course price, and it does almost everything the D200 does.
    Thanks

I'm a noob at DSLR, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

Seems like a nice piece, but I've only been messing with it for an hour or so. I'm not one to RTFM, so I'm learning it as I go. I picked up the requisite accessories, but need some kind of cover for the LCD. Speaking of which, that 3" LCD is awesome.

I've also started looking into lenses. Putting any pro-level lenses on this camera, with it's plastic body, will make me look as much of a wanker as those guys who wear racing gloves and neck braces at open track days.

Believe me, you will look a lot more stupid if you had a 18-55 IS mounted on a 1DMk3. One tip you must know is the lenses make more of a difference than the camera body. To follow that rule, I will buy 3 pro 2.8 zoom lenses before I buy a D3, which is Nikon's pro body.

    Thanks

He's saying canon's cheapest/arguably worst lens on canon's most expensive/arguable best DSLR is much more laughable than an expensive lens on a cheap body.

    I agree.
