On the subject of GP and Mille Miglia Mercs, 2 memories.

Late 80's when I lived at Silverstone and was busy crashing a lot of Formula Fords one day there was a demo of 2 Silver Arrows, Surtees was in one of the cars, I think Neil Corner, whom I would visit a decade later in 1998 for an article owned one, in fact one of the two may have been an Auto Union. They certainly sounded amazing. It was a minor race day on the club circuit.

Mille Miglia, 1999,early evening before the start, I was with some American friends who had entered a Ferrari we were in the long line pushing the cars towards the start to avoid overheating when I suddenly spotted 722, that bald Englishman with the twinkling eye at the wheel and...his wife pushing alone!!!

Having spoken to them at Concorso Italiano a few years before I knew they were very approachable and friendly so I offered to help her push she welcomed the offer and we chatted after a couple of minutes, since she has a sense of humor I suggested
that she might want to wear a fake beard to look like Jenks in the car (Dennis Jenkinson the famous English journalist who had a long beard and was Moss's co driver taht winning year of 56) I knew that she would not mind the joke and in fact she immediately answered; "Yes! And imitate his little mannerisms!"

We've had a 330GT MK2 for 24 yrs - a car I've grown up with......many other classics have come and gone, but this car has brought us together as a family and been a catalyst to making many friends across the Ferrari world, who share a comparable passion......isn't that what it's really all about?

Agree completely - as many of you know, my father bought his 500 Mondial in 1960, two years before before I was born. I do not know of any Ferrari ownerships that are longer (I know there must be some) except perhaps for 0510M which has been in various holding companies of the Jim Hall family since the car was new. We had many crazy offers in the late 80's which were many, many times my father's Navy salary - it just wasn't the issue; the car is part of the family.

My late grandmother used to have 4 framed pictures hanging in the entry hall of her home; her three grandsons and one of the Mondial - she called it her "first grandchild". . . .

We, too, have had the pleasure of meeting and becoming friends with an amazing array of Ferrari aficionados all around the globe by virtue of having owned and researched this great car - including many of you on this forum. We started dissasembling and carefully conserving/restoring the car two and a half years ago. To say that my 73 year old father is giddy with anticipation at being able to attend this holy grail event with the old girl and to drive her on the Pebble Tour is an understatement.

Marc, your probably not going to want to be reminded of the date of the Surtees/Corner demo.....................It was the first Coys Historic Festival in Jul '90.At that time, Neil Corner owned both the Mercedes W154 (driven by Surtees) and an Auto Union D Type both rebuilt and prepped by Crosthwaite and Gardiner.

thrue, i m agree with your comment. sometimes the life comes complicate and many people sold the cars or anything with interest for going ahead.
i imagine the sadness of owners who wants to seprate of their collection, i was really desapointed for the collecion of A Obrist

Well...either it was on the one or two occasions when I visited Silverstone from the US that year, or there were two similar events within a couple of years but I am sure you are right. It was quite a sight and sound!

The GTO that was sold has connections to one or two specific F-Chatters. Since they have not chimed into this thread on the details, I'll follow their lead and keep quiet on the chassis number. The car was definitely not the Violatti car, and was in fact from North America. I was very surprised to find out which one it was.

In July 1990 the Grand Prix car Mercedes-Benz W196 #000 06 was sold with the French collector Jacky Setton by the intermediary of Edgar Bensoussan of "British Motors" in Paris. The price of this sale was $20,000,000, information comes from Edgar Bensoussan itself. A few years later Jacky Setton resold the W196 #000 06 with the German collector Friedhelm Loh.

Doug Nye answered this on another forum on this sale :

"I think that this Mercedes-Benz W196 remains the most expensive car sold to date - having cost Setton the then equivalent of some £13-million Sterling, which netted the previous owner something like £11.7-million profit! I believe Setton took a considerable loss financially when he eventually sold the car on to Loh - and it has now been sold on yet again....this time vanishing into (or adjacent to) Saudi Arabia...."

Does this mean that Axel Schuette in Germany has traded the ex Freshman / Shirley et al Ferrari transporter to Peter Heuberger in Switzerland?

 

At least the numberplate is German.

 

That car may have sold, but the car that just sold for 30 is not it. The person in the trade that told me about it said "When I had one nobody would give five million for it."
