Tyrant alarm clock dials your contacts if you refuse to wake

by Darren Murph, posted Jul 2nd 2008 at 11:35AM
We've seen alarm clocks institute some fairly unorthodox methods of waking users up, but this is exceptionally high on the list of "oh, no they didn'ts." Alice Wang's Tyrant, which we can only assume is a concept, actually dials a random number in one's mobile contact list for every three minutes that the sleeper doesn't address the obnoxiously loud ringing. In other words, unless you pick yourself up out of bed within ten minutes of the alarm going off, you'll have three angry friends wondering why they're getting phone calls from you everyday at O-five-hundred hours. Brilliant. Pure, sadistic, barbarous brilliance.

    Hilarious.

Problem is, I'd set this thing for 3:30am and ignore it just for fun.

Lucky for me, I put my phone on silent when I go to sleep.

So here's a question for you heavy sleepers out there:

What tricks do you use for waking up and staying up?

I really want some ideas as I know someone that has a real problem with this.

Training myself to get out of bed as soon as I'm even partially awake or aware of the alarm- I find that I'm more awake within a few minutes than I would be had I stayed in bed (in a partially conscious state).

Put your alarm clock on the other side of the room and keep it loud. That way you can't just hit snooze and fall back asleep. You actually have to get up and walk over to the other side of the room to turn it off.

Just imagine if you had an old ex gf's number in your phone and the alarm was set for 3am or something. They would think it was a booty call when all it was was your alarm..

    I'm a hugely heavy sleeper.

What works for me is to make sure I sleep the right amount. If I stayed up too late or went to bed early, I end up over or under tired. With a good 7.5 to 8 hours, I am set. I also set my alarm clock for about 30 minutes before I really need to get up. I wake up slow, and giving myself a period of time to wake up helps a lot. I also keep my blinds open so it's light when I wake up. I've tried those clocks that fade in with light to help wake you - doesn't really work for me. But what DOES work is a 2-stage alarm. I have one of those alarms that I guess are meant for him and her... the first alarm comes on at 7am and is the radio. The next one comes on at 7:30 and is the beeper. The radio kicks me out of dreaming. The beeper alarm is set for the time that "you REALLY need to get up NOW or you WILL be late for work".

For some people, setting the time to be later than it is helps, because the alarm goes off, and in their sleepy state they forget they set it forward, and the shock of "oh no! THATs the time?!?!?" gets their ass out of bed... kind of hard to do to yourself, but if you have a spouse or friend do it, it works wonders.

Not so easy. I'm talking about a seriously heavy sleeper. This person has 3 alarm clocks and they are all out of reach. With one alarm clock she will "sleep walk" to get to it, turn it off, then climb back in bed and go back to sleep. With 3 in a row set at 5-10 minutes apart, the process eventually wakes her; but I was interested in better solutions since it only works 90% of the time and we were discussing how to make it fail safe.

Wow. The only other ideas I am coming up with is putting broken glass or thumb tacks on the floor on her way to the alarm clocks. That should wake her up.. good luck with that one though. :D

I have a Maine Coon that hates my alarm ringtone... she'll jump up on the bedstand and start attacking / biting my phone, if I don't get up and stop her I'll have to get a new phone.. :p

I don't use an alarm clock. But...

    I could crash at 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 1 , 2 or 3...

... and still wake up by or at 3:30 a.m....

    without using an alarm clock.

It's a blessing or a curse, depending on how you look at it.

I once had an alarm whose loudspeaker was somewhat broken and sounded just frightening. A bit like scratching your finger nails over a black board, but 1000 times worse. I was so terrified by that alarm that I woke up exactly one minute before the set time and as soon as I realized that I was awake, I jumped out of my bed in a hurry and switched the alarm off. Now I have a different alarm (radio), but I'm still so frightened by that old one that everytime I set the alarm, I wake up one minute earlier.

That's the way my mom taught me to get myself up in kindergarten.

I still remember her telling me, "I'm not ever goning to come up and wake you up. If you can't get up on your own you'll have to deal with the consequences of being late for school."

I had a roommate in college who was a heavy (read: comatose) sleeper. We had neighbors calling the apartment management because his alarm would go off for hours and they thought someone died in bed since the alarm didn't get shut off :D but anyways I found him this alarm clock from Sharper Image which in addition to being ultra-loud had this round disc that you slipped under your pillow and connected to the alarm clock. When the alarm would go off this disc would vibrate violently (and I mean like brain tumor violent!) but needless to say...got my roommate the hell out of his bed every morning ;)

    How serious is serious?

I'd recommend an ankle leash over wrist, but I think these images give you a rough idea of what I'm thinking... ;)

Yeah, I know the timer is 120v and the winch is 12v, but you got the picture, didn't ya?

One way to wake up easier is to make the sun come up: of course not all of us have the luxury of sleeping in until sunrise, so we have to set a light on a timer to come on half an hour or whatever before the alarm is supposed to go off. This will trick the body into thinking it's time to get up...

You could always put your alarm clock across the room by your bedroom door, after you get there and it sounds off at its highest level you might as well head to the bathroom, you're halfway there anyway.
