At my mother's house there is a garage that is approximately 34'x 25' with 10ft ceilings that she would like to convert to a 2br/1bth with entertainment area. Its not a bad size and she is mainly trying to pin down different ideas. She has searched online but is maybe searching for the wrong parameters.

What would be some places to get ideas from? Have any of you done something like this?

Don't bother with any kind of planning until you check your local building codes. The conversion may not be allowed at all. There are different codes in different areas. Sometimes you have to list the structure as a separate address, unless it is connected to the main living area, either directly or by a breezeway.

Next is utilities. Do you have adequate electrical service to the garage? Water supply? Sewer/septic drainage? Heating system? Insulation? Hook up to cable service? Phone lines?

Lots to think about. I'm sure there are people here who have done it. I've thought about it for own big detached garage, but I need the garage more than extra living space.

Structure is fixed to her house and already has full utilities. No code problems to work out, thank goodness!

that's good. that's a pretty nice size garage, however, that could wind up being a pretty small area for what she wants to do. has she thought about doing maybe a 1 bed 1 bath and an entertainment center instead of a 2 bed?

It seems like she wants 2. 1 would have to be small though.
