I am thinking about importing an US-spec Carerra GT to the UK. Wondering if anyone here has done it before. If yes, please share your experience in terms of costs and level of difficulties. How much modification to the car is required? I owned the car since 2005 so do I still have to pay VAT? thanks in advance.

Should be no duty if you have owned it in you name for two years, its the only car you are importing and you keep it for at least a year.

I know someone who runs an import business, he imports a lot of cars from the states. I will ask him and get back to you.

I have spoken to him, he said he can do the shipping part for you if you need it done, he said you will have to pay import duty and VAT on the cars value plus duty as they really rape you on it!

    Taken from the HMRC website:

Importing your motor vehicle to the UK from outside the EU

If you are permanently importing a motor vehicle into the UK from outside the EU you must declare the vehicle to customs, and you must fill in and sign form C104A and present it when you bring the vehicle into the country.

You don't have to pay duty or VAT on the vehicle provided you meet all these conditions:

    * you are moving your normal home to the UK
    * you have had your normal home outside the EU for a continuous period of at least 12 months
    * you have possessed and used the vehicle for at least six months outside the EU
    * you didn't get the vehicle under a duty/tax-free scheme
    * you're going to keep the vehicle for your personal use for at least 12 months after it's imported

So looks like you wont have to pay. Im currently importing two of my cars into the UK, but I dont qualify so I will have to pay!

Thanks for the reply so far. The issue concerns me the most is the cost to modify the car to meet UK standards. Anyone knows any company who can take care of everything for me?

There are minimal changes required for the car to be homologated to UK standards.
Many of the cars sold last year in the UK via top end prestige dealers were US imports. One of my friends bought an ex-US car and Porsche Reading (the only Carrera GT service centre in the UK) charged something like £4-5K for the changeover (which is primarily the headlights), so it's NOT big money at all.
The way of doing it is to get the car into the UK, don't register it straight away, send it to Porsche. Ask them for the conversion and THEN get it to the DVLA for registration.

Thanks again for your helpful comments. Is it possible someone can provide a contact at Porsche Reading? I want to make sure everything works and how much it costs before I ship the car over.

Hi Nick - Speak to Darren Street.

There are many imported Carrera GTs in the UK and many of the Middle East guys will start shipping over their cars in force during July for their summer in london so really, I wouldn't worry about converting for homologation.

Temporary importation is different from permanent importation.

The changes you need to make are minimal (just lights, if I remember right) and it is a straightforward process for a modern car. DVLA will have the details you need.

With the current dollar/pound exchange rate, and the financial situation especially in the US, exotics (as well as normal porsches, BMWs etc) are now really really cheap compared to european prices. Carrera GTs and SLRs are the ones that given their nature one would think is worth the effort of importing etc.
However does anyone have a detailed list of the spec differences between US and european models?
Ive read in other places, that for example US 911s have a higher ride height, and US CGTs are lower powered due to emission regulations etc.
Cosmetically, I can only spot the front quarter indicators on the US cars.
Would love to see a verified, definitive list of these differences...
