I don't know the exact rules. You might be right about the 10th place finish. I thought (but I might be wrong on this) they only count the points paying positions and if those are equal (freakishly they are for both of them) then it matters who got the best position first. Dunno.

At any rate, the standings are:

1) Hami
2) Massa
3) Kimi

and not:
1) Hami, Massa, Kimi

subtle difference

I would gladly look like that if I could drive a Ferrari in Formula 1. And I couldn't finish much worse than scoring NO POINTS.

 

Crap, I would look like Kubica if it meant getting to drive F1...

 

+1 and great post. The armchair experts have it nailed, they were under the car Friday and all day Saturday and did the post race teardowns today. The presumptive nature of Ferrari fans is amazing here. Massa or Kimi, I could care less, I want a Ferrari victory no matter if Santa is driving. Its silly to put down Felipe.

 

Yeah, i guess we can forget about that double-pass on RB and HK in Canada. Clearly, the guy can't pass anyone. Shoot, after one bad weekend at Silverstone, he probablly deserves to lose his drive with Ferrari, his street drivers lisence, and should probablly be exiled to somewhere where he's not even allowed to drive a golf cart---he probablly couldn't handle it.
absolutely unreal. I think the world would be a pretty ugly place if everyone caught this much flack when they had a bad day at work. But then again, heck, he's probablly not worthy to drive a Ferrari if he's going to mess up once in a while---the team needs perfect superhuman drivers who never ever make mistakes.
My .02--the team botched up the weekend every bit as bad as Massa did and they should both be equally blamed for a horrible race.

 

Can we assume that you are also a member of the "Armchair experts?"

 

I think Massa can at times be quicker than Kimi, but still think Kimi is a more consistent and therefore the better of the 2 drivers. At the same time, i'm sick of all the Massa-bashing that seems to be so prevalent around here as soon as Massa makes a mistake--he's still a good driver.

You will notice that is the same posters. If Ted were here we would be into an all out battle. I can see how some may not like what happened to Ferrari and Massa but some posters seem to be lurking in the bushes just waiting to jump all over Massa when something goes wrong. At least Sgt Mike keeps things in some sort of perspective. Anyway Ferrari had a bad day for many reasons and now we move on. Only the boys sitting in the bush will keep this thread going.

 

I am no expert no matter how many times Ive been to a race. I have never stated any amount of expertise or even # of races attended. I have no idea what they did to the car nor does anyone else here so if you, know post away. Beyond that I dont car which driver wins as long as he drives a red car with a black prancing stallion. Jknight seems to have some insight and posted about the condition of his car. So be it.

FM is driving it and he knows better than any of us. The broadcast armchair experts continuously hinted about a problem given FM's inability to apply power and not spin. They might know more as they have driven.

I never stated anything like that(expertise) other than support for both drivers. Some folks just dont like Massa. Fine. Cars do fail I would think as well as drivers at times.

 

Massa can be quicker than Kimi?....when??? IIRC, so far out of the nine races of this season Massa has a grand total of................0 fastest laps. Kimi, on the other hand has 6 including the last two races where he had a broken car in one race and adverse weather conditions with arguably the wrong tires in the other race. I'm not following where you're thinking that Massa can be quicker than Kimi? Unless you're refering to testing or quali where Massa basically has an open track, isn't having to race anyone and his car is set up perfectly for him. Then yes, sometimes Massa can make one really fast lap.

 

A few passes here and there does not a good driver make.

It's nothing specific to Massa. Frankly, many of the drivers in F1 are incapable of making a good pass. Even Alonso, one of the best drivers on the grid, often makes stupid mistakes when trying to pass (like when he t-boned Heidfeld), and Kimi did it as well to Sutil just in Monaco. But Lewis was the star of Silverstone. He drove the way the others wished they could have driven. Massa may have had a bad setup on the car, but if you are spinning out, you are losing places. Spinning out 6 times is IMO not justifiable by having a bad setup on the car. If you are out of the point and you continue to spin out, then you are just driving stupidly and/or are inept.

Schumacher was a super fast driver and a great passer, and legendary in the wet. I think if Schumi was in the car this weekend, he would likely have scored a podium if not a win. He set the bar at Ferrari pretty high and it is not easy for Kimi to come close, let alone Massa.

If Hamilton matures with time and tempers his speed with smart racecraft the way Schumi did, he will be a multi-WDC winner before his career is over.

 

He thinks he can win. In your book that would be he thinks he's better. Anything less and he shouldn't be participating in any sports.

 

Wait, let me get this straight... So you say that Massa is only quick when he has an open track or during qualy, over ONE lap. But since he can only be quick over one lap or when he has an open track, he's not actually as fast as Kimi..........who has set fast lap during several races. Fast LAP. ONE Lap. So, Kimi's ONE fast lap during the race proves his inherent superiority over Massa, yet Massa's ONE fast lap during qualifying which has put him on Pole several times this season doesn't count.
So the fast one lap Massa puts in during Qualy (when there is arguably more pressure), is far less legitimate than Kimi's one fast lap during the race.
Thus Kimi is faster, because his one fast lap is better than Massa's one fast lap.

That makes sense...

It would if you understood racing. A fast race lap is under adverse conditions. You've got a lot more traffic to deal with as well as a changing car (fuel load, tire wear, possible damage to the car) and changing track. During qualifying the car is in its ideal configuration for maximum speed for the weekend and by 3Q there's half as many cars on the track as during a race and if they're going slow they have to get out of your way. You've pretty much got as close to a free and clear lap as you're going to get.

Having said that I don't put too much credibility in a fast race lap or in pole position lap in the current rules. I'd say a better barometer is to take a look at their average lap times during a race rather than faster lap. And pole position is often decided by fuel load rather than out and out speed. So there's a compromise there. Senna hardly ever had the fastest race lap but, he was racing during a time when the driver had a lot to do with reliability of the car. A driver had to push but not over push the car and during 80s you had no refueling so you had to race with an eye on conservation. But, they qualified with hardly any fuel so the guy on pole really was the fastest guy out there and not a fast guy with less fuel. I guess you could say the examples of race and qualifying from then to now have been reversed.

Given that who would you say is faster? I'd say Kimi. He's certainly the more rounded and consistent driver.

I do, because Massa does suck.

Everytime he wins, even a Ferrari 1-2 finish, I dont feel like "really celebrating".

I'd rather see KR or MS up there.

I just dont like his attitude and his gestures.

I think there's a difference. Having an opinion based on fact and rational discourse is great. Having an opinion based on a strong bias, irrational emotion and things you just plain pulled out of your ass, would probably qualify one as being this "arm chair expert".
