I currently have a CLK BS which I love. However, I think I have found its replacement. Talked with my dealer today. They had a meeting yesterday where it was announced to them that there would be an SL Black Series. It is going to be a fixed roof coupe with the engine specs as noted here. They were told that price would be $180K. Official introduction will be at the German GP. Delivery expected next spring. I cannot wait!!!

Isn't the base price on the regular SL65 AMG $190K? I so wish this was only a 1/3rd pop or so price wise over the regular version, in line with our CLK63 AMG Black, but at the $320K quoted, thats about 3/4 more than the standard cars price. I'm not sure if its worth $130,000 more than a the regular AMG SL65. Essentially we're talking about the same ballpark as a 599GTB. Personally I'd take the SL Black everytime on looks alone. I just wish it was a bit less price wise. Buying one used might be an option for me. This really is a car that gets the blood going. The road presence this car must have is unbelievable. I think it might be pacing the Hockenheim race, so we'll have to keep our eyes open.

What's the point of *ANY* SL where the top does not come down?

I have been on the list for one for a while now. I was told somewhere around 100 would be comming stateside...I really hope I get one. Yes it is not a convertible which I will admit is a big downside....but I think the fact that it looks awesome and has 660HP more than makes up for it. Price is suppose to be about $300k.

This thing is obscene in the best way possible. Sure, you can get a used SLR in that price range, but visually I think this SL Black Series is much more aggressive.

$320k sounds like way too much, especially given the massive depreciation of the high-end Benz cars, but then again I'm not really in a position to worry about that. These could be a sweet pick up in 3 years when they're under $200k.

I cant help but just see a tuned SL. Paying $320k for a Benz should get you something completely different than the dentist next door.

I agree that it is a tad expensive but you dont want to be one of those losers at the country club with just the regular SL65...(joking)

Factory video of the car on the race track. Wish it had a little bit more muscular sound to go along with the looks, but with twin turbos, its exhaust sound is pretty consistent with other turbo'd cars out there.

Unfortunately, I'm not that excited by it. I'm still of the opinion that the CLK63 BS is the right way to go. I've watched prices closely, and they've come to a point where I think they're starting to make sense to me. Knocking on sub-$100K numbers right now for a car with 2-3K miles on it. Where can they possibly go in the next 6-12 months? And, if the CLK BS has that kind of a depreciation hit (35%+/- even while the car is in production), just imagine how much depreciation there would be on an SL65 BS! In fact, I've also seen a very nice SL65 recently with ~13K miles at sub-$100K pricing, too. Just too painful to buy a brand spanking new AMG.

Got a call from my MB dealer yesterday. The SL BS is going to be about $350K. I said thanks, but no thanks. I'll wait for a few months until the depreciation hits. It looks like a great car, but not $200K better than my CLK BS.

$350k for the SL Black eh... So by 2010 the car should be around $170k, and 2012 it will be selling for $100k. :D MB AMG resale value rocks!

They should have put gull-wing doors on it, would have more completely differentiated it from any other SL.

its ok as a bad ass street car for a mb fanatic. no sense having 4000 + lbs for track car though.

advantage over 599/scud is you will not have to pay premium or wait 3 yrs to get one. those ferraris are closer to $500k actual transaction price for an immediate delivery unless your a 'special customer'

I agree 100%. I Bought my CL65 w/10k miles on it for less than half the sticker and it was flawless. Awesome cars for sure.

Then again, when you sell the 599 in 2 years, you will retain a lot of the value, but when you sell the SL BS, you will lose your shirt.

Of course, all that really matters is how much $$$ you have parked in the vehicle for the period of time, and how much of that $$$ you will lose, but with the depreciation of the AMG, I would venture a guess that the numbers would probably be quite close, maybe even in the 599's favor (especially if you buy the car at a good number)

I like the car, but it sure seems like a lot of cash for what it is. BTW what would an SLR go for today? It seems that, at the 300k price range, that would be the Merc for me.

4100# with lots of CF. SLR was what, close to that? And no functional top/removable? World's fastest dentist indeed, Andrew. :p

As usual the details evade the casual observation; especially in the case of the SL65 AMG Black Series. Light weight materials and a fixed roof help to reduce the weight by 500 pounds. The front styling is different (style and size of the grill opening for example) the roof is a different shape and the back window is also different. The leaky ABC suspension is ditched in favour of coil-over shocks. Some changes in this series are possible because the car is exempt from certain EU standards. This is due to a small production run of only 350 units. The engine makes so much power that it's output is restricted to help the drivetrain live. Mercedes is finally building a proper SLR...

The only body panels on the Black Series SL that are shared with the other SL models are the doors. The rest are exclusive to the BS. Certainly a unique effort by AMG for the SL series.

^ I still can't get over the 4080lb curb weight after all the weight saving and losing the hardtop. I also don't much like the new facelifted front end on the SL. I wish they would have made a SL Black Series with a carbon convertible top and the classic front end.
