I took my wife's new car to the grocery store and parked it in BFE, nobody on either adjacent aisle, on the end of a row. When I came out, someone had hit the rear bumper and left some paint and a dent. The ***** didn't even have the courtesy to leave a note. I got so pissed off because I took the time to be careful and some jackass didn't. The moral of the story is that stuff happens. We can't control it. Even if you park in a corner next to a planter with a cart return on one side, somebody who isn't making the car payment can still leave you a present.

If it's crowded, your'e not going to find 2 car park spaces beside each other anyway so its a moot point. Most of the car parking around here is free, so if you use 2 spaces, no one is going to tow you anyway, or give you a ticket.

My usual practise (with any car ) is to park in the furthest corner of a near vacant parking garage , but often someone decides to park right next to my car, even when there are literally 100+ other places to chose from. And the cars are usually the type not owned by "car people', ie something nondescript, dirty. stickers all over it, missing hubcaps, full of crap inside, basically a car owned by someone who couldnt "give a stuff".
I've wondered abouty this phenomenon, Maybe their car guides itself next to mine, hoping the cleanliness will rub off by some kind of osmosis when their parked together?
Or perhaps the person has some kind of a weird line mentality, where they feel the need to 'get in line" beside the next car ?

We call that the "movie theatre move" 'round these parts. People can't help it, they're lemmings.

i only take two spots, which is frequently, out in the hinterlands where there are 20 or more open spots. i do it to park diagonally so a door swing can't contact my car. i have been lucky to have owned several older cars with their original paint and no door dings. I don't want to be the first jagoff to ding up my 20 year old 328 when the last five guys have preserved it so well.

When I managed the BMW dealership in Odessa, Texas we had to share the building with the Chevrolet dealership while the new BMW dealership was under construction. One afternoon the Chevrolet service manager came into my office and asked me to come to the shop to make a management decision. I went in the shop to see a 328GTS parked across two shop spaces diagonally in the opposite direction of the other cars in the shop. I went back into the showroom to find the owner of the 328 looking at a new M5. I asked him to please move his car as it was blocking two technicians from pulling cars into their bays to work on. He very rudely told me that "I will go move my car when I am ready to and not until. Tell your shop manager and the mechanics to just shut up".

I went back into the shop and relayed the message to the shop manager. When the customer decided he was not going to be able to buy an M5 from us because I would not discount it $5K he walked back into the shop to leave. Upon arrival there he found the Ferrari gone. Seems that since it was parked in the shop without a ticket having been written on it the shop had the right to impound the car. It had been placed in outside lockup and he had to pay $250 to pay the impound and towing charges. It had been placed in a dusty lot with a bunch of drug cars, repos and such. He never came back to the dealership. I feel he got what he deserves. Not exactly a good representation of a Ferrari owner.....

This happens more often than anyone would freely admit, but most of the posters on this thread are so super-wealthy that having one's car damaged by the carelessness of others is perfectly acceptable and should be freely tolerated if you have the money to pay for repairs.

What a ridiculous statement. Treat others as you would have them treat you. It's as simple as that.

I have heard alot of this sort of thing from 308/328 owners... Maybe they resent the fact that they do not own a 348 or 355....? Or maybe they resent the fact that a e46 M3 would outperform it in every category... who knows.

What I feel is a problem is that most think it is better to be PC and park like everyone else, than to take the extra step and prevent damage from occuring. Just because I have a nice car does not mean it's ok for some idiot to ding it or vandalize it. I would not take up two spots in a crowded area and do not mind walking. However, If I am going to leave the car for a few hours I do double park it sometimes. The ticket is waaaay cheaper than the door ding, and if the haters want to key it you can't stop them. I feel I am being responsible, and to each his own. Scott

What constitutes a 'nice car' ?

At my local mall Id say at least 30%+ are 'nice cars' to the people that own them ( read newer and kept clean )...so if those people all decided since they had a 'nice car' they were going to double park that would really cause problems dont you think ?

It should have nothing to do with what a car costs or maybe we should have the 'rich persons' spots next to the handicap since they are so obviously superior to everyone else. Furthermore in terms of percentage of net worth I would bet that the person driving their new Camry is spending more than the person driving the new Ferrari. So exactly WHO can afford to fix the dings in their car ?

From where Im standing it has nothing to do with PC... its pure ego on the part of the 'nice car' owner to believe they are so special they can double park.

Ego has nothing to do with it. Nor does the percentage/value of the car vs income. Parking lots are always first come first serve. If I was driving a truck with a trailer I would have no choice. Maybe YOU are an honest stand-up person and would wait until I showed up to pay me for your door ding/scratch. However, most are not. Best of luck to you, and I will try to keep my NICE cars out of harms way, Scott

Better to find those larger parking spaces,, the ones next to a wall or a post, island etc so you can come close on one side. That way you don't call any attention or "lesson teachers"

Of course not. But you cannot control the actions of others. You can, however, control your own actions. And acting like a jackass and taking two spots just because you feel you and your car are more special than others shows that you don't respect others. You care about YOU, just like a large portion of our country.
