I would think it will depend largely on what size area you have to work with and the number of models and scale you are trying to house. I have a nice cabinet (sorry, no photo's on this computer) that i purchased and modified to fit more shelves, holds about 35 ish 1:18 scale. Gets plenty of comments from visitors to my home.

Are you thinking inbuilt or free standing?

Great idea on a thread by the way, i would love to see peoples cabinet's also.

I will get some pics of mine up when i am with my home computer.

I'd post some up, but mine are custom. I've got 12-car acrylic cases mounted on the wall (and Autoart 1:12 cases on 3-shelf bookshelves) - I'd love to see some custom setups.

I use some cheap modular ones that came out nice, once lower solid doors and upper glass ones were added with shelves....sadly Storehouse discontinued them and I suppose it was just as well, 5 units are 30' of storage...overflow models are tossed into the closet!

Gregg took some cameraphone pics of them, I don't know what he did with them....

I think it would be cool to have it in the wall (not hanging), with lighting and a glass slider or door would be very cool. I have seen a few like that and they look great, plus you get to keep the floor space.

The one I saw had a dark wood frame around it and white or smoked glass (lit from behind) for the shelf and the backing, with sliding glass.

When my son is older I'm going to make a continuous display for his room with a banked road-surface so the cars are angled. I thought that could look cool running along the wall.

I just bought a condo a month ago, so I am working on a display ROOM. It is going to be my little "shrine". It is almost finished. I'll post pictures as soon as it is done.

Where did you get that display case from? Very Nice!

Here are some decent ones currently available at Ikea

    1) Bergsbo - Red or White - Decent size @ $279.00
    2) Aspvik - White - Ok Size @ $149.00
    3) Linnarp - Black, Pine or Red - Decent Size @349.00

I looked at the Ikea ones.... problem is the shelves are not really that deep. So if you want to put a lot of models in, or put them at an angle, most of these do not work.
Nice display cases are very hard to find!

I am working on the same thing atm.

My house is almost finished being built and my "diecast" room is all I can think about lol.

I currently have 3 x Ikea detolfs (pictured below) which hold 12-13 cars in each. They are a great display.

The Ikea Bertby display is also awesome for 1:18 diecasts if you have the space http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00093136

I am planning on getting 2-3 perspex wall mounted display cases which each hold 12 x 1:18 cars so to display the other 1:18 diecasts I have.

As soon as its done I will post pics. I also hope to have my racing simulator set up too if funds suffice!

That is a great display unit JDM-NZ.

Like I mentioned the Ikea cabinets are nice yet you cannot fit many models in them. Would be great to have one that fits 40-50 cars such as yours.

Thanks for the positive comments guys. I picked up my cabinet at a local furniture store, i had been looking for over 3 years (no joke) and this one finally caught my eye. I really like the halogen lights and the mirror back, it adds a depth to the cabinet in person that photos cannot show. I will see if i can get some better shots of it and post them in this thread.
When i purchased the cabinet i ordered it with extra shelves and brackets so i could fit in more models, as its turned out the look is spot on for displaying models and the fit and finish of the cabinet is excellent.

Trouble is, when all the Ferrari models i have coming to me from around the world arrive it will be full and i still have plenty more i want, guess ill be visiting that furniture store again sometime soon.
