So I've made a few engine changes; well, actually quite a few... intake, cams, pistons, ignition, exhaust, and I seem to have lots of power. But the close ratio gear box is a pain. I run out of revs quickly. Did a search, but found nothing. Anyone changed the final drive gears/ratio? Comments?

Plese share details on your new setup. The us versions have a longer 5th than euro but the other 4 are near the same and ratios are too close. My new civic does 85mph @ 2650rpm,verses 4200.I share your strain

I know what you guys are saying. I really wonder what you could get out of a 308 top end wise with a few engine mods and a taller 5th gear.

Mark (Mk_e) was looking into switching the position of the drop down gears, i.e. top gear to bottom gear, to get move top end speed. Ckeck with him to see if that's doable, and what the end results will yield.

That kit only looks like it would improve acceleration and not top end.
I'm interested in what final drive you could use to really ring the most out of a 308 in terms of top speed.

Changing the drop down gear will move the entire gear ratio 1st gear through 5th. It's like changing the rear end gears in a conventional front engine, rear wheel drive car. Talk to Nick and tell him what you want the car to do.

The only alternative is changing the complete gearbox (long + short shafts) and/or changing the differential.
Anyone can swap cascade gears in 10 minutes.
Changing the gearbox or differential may take a while longer than that and requires a different set of skills.

Maybe get some taller tires ?? :)

FYI, cars mfg for differrent markets had different gearing, check the specs in Kieth Bleumel's book "original Ferrari V8".
The Swiss spec cars (like mine) have a taller final drive ratio than any other market (3.70:1), this is offset by a lower 1st gear, and a much more "close ratio" relationship 2-3-4-5 than other markets. Interesting stuff, I dig my gearbox! Perhaps a Swiss final drive with USA trans gearing, and a drop gear ratio change could produce, say 200mph for a 370hp supercharged Euro 308 :) ??? JK

There should be plenty possibilities within the different boxes fitted to the 308/328 range.

My '82 GTSi also runs out of revs, but more importantly, when cruising at high speeds (180+km/h) the high revs make it uncomfortable, the high revs are not needed by any means to attain the spped. That's the kind of speeds we cruise at with the club on outings, but these guys all pitch up with their 360s and 430s. I have no idea what my engine cranks out, but with a practically open exhaust it breathes well and certainly could handle a somewhat taller diff.

    Are all 308/328 diffs interchangeable?

Sounds like some want a taller overall top gear and some want an overdrive auxillary box.
There's no way to fit an overdrive box with that drive train layout. So its mix and match diff ratios if the centers are interchangeable.
Judging by the lack of diff threads here they must be fairly bullet proof under normal use but someone must've switched their centers over.
    Someone?
