Fernando Alonso has played down the impact of his rookie teammate Nelson Piquet's breakthrough podium in the German Grand Prix.

Team boss Flavio Briatore hailed the 22-year-old Brazilian's "amazing race" at Hockenheim, where the ideal timing of the mid-race safety car turned his one-stop strategy into a second place at the chequered flag.

To the Spanish newspaper Diario AS, however, former World Champion Alonso made clear Piquet's achievement was "down to luck."

"It was quite a bad weekend for Nelsinho, but suddenly he got a Safety Car on the best possible lap for him and he is on the podium."

"This is the Safety Car lottery," Alonso explained, insisting that the R28 is not good enough to be racing to the podium on merit.

"Without luck we can only be aiming for seventh or eighth," he added.

In the newspaper, Alonso also bemoaned the car's lack of general traction, and said the problem only has one remedy.

"Yes, wait for next year's car," he said.

Yea see this is the kind of crap I wouldn't want to hear from him if he was in a red car. No matter what car he's driving or who his team is he seems to always say the car is not right (ok, for this years Renault I would probably agree) or his team isn't supporting him as much as teammate x or so and so isn't coddling him and feeding him a bottle. Some will probably flame me and say he's just being "honest". But what I never hear from him is what he is trying to do as a 2x WDC and the highest paid driver on the circuit to help turn the situation around. It's excuse after excuse after excuse. He whines more than my 3 year old daughter does when she doesn't get her way.

Lets hope you very very wrong. No one needs his BS at Ferrari. Even if delivers a title with Ferrari, the long term damage would be disastrous.

what's wrong with what he said? it WAS luck that allowed Piquet on the podium. what's wrong with saying the car is midfield at best? it's true is it not? long term damage? yeah, right. keep on winning in red and no one will give a rats Azz

Alonso should not be at Ferrari for the same reason I would not like to eat chocolates made by Jefferey Dahmer , no matter how great they taste.

maybe you didn't live thru the 20+ years of damage done to a team with NO championships ?

    Soul destroying

Ferrari would have sold it's soul to the devil to win anything after all that time

Alonso needs to look in the mirror. He gave up several positions during the race because he over drove the car. He would have finished higher if he had stayed within the car's means and drove consistently. I don't believe that Alonso will ever see the inside of the cockpit of a red car. I still predict he will be with Braun at Honda for 2010 season when the Honda is better.

My point is that we, or at least I, love Ferrari, not just because of how many championships they have won or their GP stats. It is because of the characters who delivered them. To me Gilles Villeneuve was the greatest and he did not win all that much.
At MS era Alonshole vowed never to race for Ferrari, trying to be cool. Then there are countless videos on youtube showing him doing all sorts of disrespectfull (to Schumi and the scuderia) gestures. Do I want this Bozo on my favorite team? Hell no!
I don't think my comparison is unhinged, it is understated compared to my feelings towards Alonshole coming to Ferrari.

BECAUSE even when he has a legitimate point to make (and I acknowledged that in my previous post) it's getting SO old and SO tired listening to him whine about EVERYTHING - who he drives with, who his team is, what they do or don't do, why someone isn't there wiping his @ $$ after he takes a dump, why the disappearance of the rain forest is affecting his driving ability etc etc etc. He whined while he was winning with Renault about the team not throwing their full support behind him, his attitude at McLaren has been well documented on this board alone, and he's continued that whining now that he's back at Renault.

Will one of his supporters here please tell me what makes him happy, what DOESN'T cause him to whine, and why they think his piss poor attitude won't continue IF he were in a red suit and car?? Frankly, I can't figure it out. And I can't even imagine what he would be saying if he was driving for Ferrari with their un-starlike performance for the last few races.

The bottom line is he is a 2x WDC. He is the highest paid driver on the grid. He needs to step up and do something constructive for a change to help turn things around - or at least pretend that he is. Say something like "Well we're failing here but this is what we're going to do about it and we're going to try *this* or *that* and bring our A game next time......." - or just shut his pie hole and slink away into obscurity.

It seems to me that Alonso just said the truth.

Piquet is a big boy and no doubt he knows he just won the timing lottery. We all know it too and so does Alonso.

Alonso is a great driver and a jerk following in the Ferrari time honored tradition of the same ilk namely: Prost and Mansell just to name two.

Ferrari wants to win races. Being a nice guy has never been very important to the SF team IMVHO.

It's a tradition. And if alonso wins the WDC for Ferrari he will be loved on this forum. If he does not he will be villified and repudiated as it should be.

There is no love lost between Hammy and Alonso. I can't wait. ;)

What did he say that wasn't true? Piquet knows this himself.

    100% correct.

Some on this site are simply full of .... . The car is obviously useless and thus luck was required to get a podium, just like luck was required for Barrichello last race, etc.

Currently Ferrari are starting the downward slope ... that is what we should be focusing on.

I agree with you 100%. If you think he is bad now wait and see what happens if Nelson overtakes him in points....WOW!!! he will blow a gasket. This guy cant keep his mouth shut. The stuff he says true or not should stay with the team and not become public statements.

the FA and Hami bashing will continue regardless. even when they don't say or do anything... there's always a reason to bash--usually over the dumbest things... i guess that's an F-chat racing section past time:)

putting a murderer and a racecar driver...FA... in the same sentence, that REALLY is unhinged. the hate is that strong here!

Isn't this what we want . . . drivers who are honest. A safety car's timing is largely a matter of luck.

Good lord, why is it that everytime Alonso's name is brought up in a thread it Immediately turns to him f***ing up Ferrari's team? This had NOTHING to do with him potentially moving to Ferrari.
Look, I have and always will be a fan of him. He is one hell of a driver. I'm not going to sit here and talk $h*t when he spins out like the ones who praise Massa when hes good and hate him when he messes up. I will always like him no matter if hes shaking everyones hand after a race thanking them for all their hardwork or if he isn't the nicest guy on the track. When the hell did being nice get anyone anywhere in racing. Jesus, look at Scott Speed, that guy was nice as hell and always chipper and laughing but he was the worst driver on the track. No one spun out as much as this cat.
If Raikkonen would have said this about Massa would it be sturring up all this crap? Probably not.

For your information he's been quoted as saying he's better than Alex Wurz :). "I know I'm better than him", to be accurate. I really don't think Scott is as bad as many people think he is. I remember seeing him closing in on Raikkonen at Monaco and finishing 9th, after starting stone last because of mechanical problems in qualifying. The car he was in was a piece of crap, no much he could do about that. Also, this is a guy who had Ulcerative Colitis really bad, he dropped down to 120lbs in weight, although he's 5'10", and was so weak he could only do 3 laps at a time when he was testing for ART in GP2. I think that contributed to a shaky 2006 season. Especially since his teammate was far more experienced than him. I'd take Scott over crash happy Coulthard, that's for sure.

I don't see anything wrong with what Alonso said, it was the truth that Piquet got on the podium due to luck and the car certainly wouldn't be there without the mix of the one stopper and the safety car at the best possible time.

For once I don't think he put his foot in his mouth which is a nice change.

Thats just it, Kimi would never talk about his team or mate that way period. As for alonso shaking hands with everyone after a race thanking them for their hard work....Aint happening. :)
