Besides, isn't Canon's 18-55 an EF-S lens? If so, I don't believe the 1DMkIII would even accept that, as the mount is different.

 

I think the mount is the same, but the lens wouldn't fit. I think the mirror would hit it. Or something like that.

 

S in EF-S = Short Back Focus

Rear element of the lens sits closer to the mirror, and it would hit.

 

Yeh, another reason I chose Nikon, compatibility. But still, you get the idea.

 

I'd suggest to any of you guys one of these Epson personal viewers. I got this p-2000 off Ebay and upgraded the drive to 120gb. It has slots on top for a CompactFlash or SD card and can copy the files from the chips and after that either delete them or leave them intact. When on a shoot, it may make sense to copy and erase and look at the images on the nice screen since it suppots raw formats On JPGs you can zoom in on the image and rotate them, make folders and watch some video as well. Overall a very useful tool.

Awesome. I have a buffalo portable hard drive/card reader, but it doesn't view photos, just tells me how much space has been used.

That's pretty cool.

 

With an extra drive the total cost came out to $250. I don't shoot digital all too often, so it does not make a tone of sense to have it, but what the heck, it is cool. In the hand it is the size of an old Betamax tape, maybe a little larger. I may get rid of it at the end of summer for the newer versio, but they are around $600 right now.

 

So, I take it there's a reason why they sell the XSi and this EF-S 18-55 lens as a package.

 

It's a bit better then the old 18-55 supposedly. I took many photos with that old lens, but no more. My main problem with it... contrast was all wrong, and the chromatic aberrations were obvious in highly contrasted images. Still, it worked pretty good.

 

They figure if you buy a lower level camera kit, that a lower level lens is what you can afford. Most people aren't buying a XSi with a 16-35 f/2.8, and 70-200 2.8 as their starting kit, they are both pro lenses. Of course, like I previously mentioned, you might get them in the future.
For a Canon example: Xsi with 18-55 low level lens, 40D with 28-135 mid level lens, 1DMK3 with no lens, it is a pro body.
For a Nikon example: D40 with 18-55 low level lens, D80 with 18-135 mid level lens, D300 with 18-200 mid level lens, D3 with no lens, it is a pro body.

In the field I usually take the D3's with a 14-24mm, 80-200mm and the M8 with the 35mm for street shots.
Keep the D2xs in my trunk with the 50mm , just in case.

I have a Nikon F2 with a rare 50mm 1.2 lens: IMO, the best mechanical 24mm camera. Just love it but don't use it much nowadays.

Currently using a lot a D200, with various lenses, but the most frequently used because of it's versatility is the Sigma 22-200mm VR... For portraits, I like to use the 50mm 1.2 lens because of it's amazing quality, but don't shoot too many portraits anymore. Will probably buy the full-frame D3 in the future...

How's the Leica? they are legendary, but I never actually shot with any...

 

Leica is a pain in the ass compared to the D3, but I love the 'old school" feel and the picture quality...superb for travel , bad for sports or anything moving fast. I'm happy I have one! The D3 just had a price cut of $500, so go grab one, you'll love it.

I am aiting for the D3 to go down a bit as it was introduced not too long ago... I'm sure prices will drop still...

For the Leica, how does it compare to the F2? I'm guessing similar performance wise, but maybe the print output will have a different "feel"?

 

I thinks it going to stay where it is until a D3x or D4 comes out next year. Never used an F2. Pictures on teh M8 dinately feel "different", hard to explain

I'm waiting for the 5D replacement.

I hope the 50D exhibits good high ISO quality. It's competing against Nikon's D300 which is, for lack of a better term, fantastic in that aspect.

 

Well, my 5D is back up on ebay. The first buyer of the auction I had 2 weeks ago turned out to actually be someone in Lithuania that was using the guy's account without his permission, according to the email I got from eBay. So, I had to relist it. ugh..

I ran into that problem on eBay before, now I only do Buy-It-Now w/ Best Offer and require immediate payment, sure it takes away the bidding but at least you get paid.

 

Now that I think about it, I probably just should have done that. It's amazing how many emails I've gotten asking me if I would ship the item to Lithuania, Israel, various African countries, etc.

 

Well no more D40 for me, I stepped up to the Canon 40D (I like those numbers and letter ) and I so far love it. I got it with the 28-135mm and am still feeling it out trying to get the hang of it which usually takes a couple days. I decided to switch to Canon simply because of the speed of the cameras, I would have to spend another $500 over what I spent on the 40D to get speed close to it.

No, unless you consider 1 fps a big difference. The D200 does 5 for about $1k.

 

I couldn't afford a D200 if I didn't sell my lenses and then I wouldn't have any. The high noise in the high ISO on the D200 is a lot worse than on the 40D.
