I just came from my local inspection station, where I was informed that starting Oct 1 in MA, there will be no more dyno emissions testing. Emissions will be on OBD cars only, using their own diagnostics. 1996 and older cars will be exempt from emissions testing the way 1983 and older are now. I guess there are just not enough older cars anymore to justify the expense. The dyno emissions systems are all being removed and replaced with OBD-based systems.

On-line references are few and far between. I expect they are keeping a lid on it as long as possible.

its not that there arent enough cars to justify the cost... its that 99.9% of the problems can be found by a visual inspection... very rarely do we have cars come in to our garage with an exhuast in perfect shape, where the engine isnt idling rough and all parts are 100% in tact that the car will flunk an emissions sniff... at my family's shop in cambridge, usually we'll see a 92 corolla with a rusted out muffler and a rattling catalytic converter, on a car that smells like it burns oil... guess what, we dont need to hook it up to the sniffer to know its gonna flunk...

This more then anything happened because the state wasnt too happy with the way things were being handled by agbar. Things got changed up and now you'll start to see a lot of 35mph dynos for sale soon.

Minor correction, it's for all 1995 and earlier cars. 1996 vehicles fall under OBD-II. :)

And if you own a Ferrari, I can't imagine you don't already know of an inspection shop that won't fail you for visuals... :)
