My car's coming due for the Big Wallet Extraction, so I checked the usual suspects and also called over to Ferrari of San Diego. Let's see who knows what the going rate is over at the dealer.

7,000 here at Ferrari of Dallas, "plus $2000 if the belts need changing"

That was last year, might be higher now

    "If"?

That's like the Chevron station charging $20 for a tank of gas, provided the tank was full when you started pumping.

A quote from an email, verbatim:

"The v belts are checked for cracks in the 30 k but the timing belts are done separetly, that’s the extra 2000.00."

And a correction, it was $5000 "and if you needs belts its another 2000.00."

You had talked earlier about a 30K Major coming-up on an earlier thread. That's at least $1,200 in parts alone, with under two weeks' of labor at $100/hour.......the big ??? is whether or not they're pulling the engine to service it. My guess is, for a 30K if they're NOT replacing any bearings, they won't be pulling the engine. If the Inner/Outer Main bearings are worn, the motor is pulled and you're looking at "at-least" nine grand.

You're kidding right? What did you do just change belts? That's not the service in a 328 or a 308. What about tensioner bearings? Valve adjustment? How about doing the water pump while it's up in the air? $7000 should be about right for a proper service all the bells and whistles...

Just the usual belts/tensioner bearings, valve adjustment, fluid service, etc. Apart from a cam o-ring seal leak, nothing wrong with the car.

Haven't posted the answer yet. ;)

FWIW, I've always gone to independents. Interestingly, when I spoke with Stacey over at FoSD, she said they were getting a lot of enquiries on 328 services -- "looks like they're really in style again". They are good people over there. But, on with the poll...

Yup, valves weren't done during the last timing belt ceremony -- not since 2000, actually -- so that's part of the deal this time.

I recently had "how long to swap the timing belts?" translated into a quote for a major by a dealership service writer, so I can guess what you were quoted.

I also discovered that an official dealership isn't necessarily the place to ask about brass injectors or steel brake lines. The 328s are getting old enough that there are better options than "by the book" for some things, but the dealers are limited in what they can do without the horse on the box.

I just paid (in April) $5,400 for FULL major AND shift shaft seals in San Francisco Bay Area. Good that you're having you valve adj checked. I had 11 valves that needed adjustment. It had been about 4.5 years and about 15,000 miles since the last major. I have a feeling you were quoted A LOT more. If so, I'd go to an independent

Hey, I thought we were gonna do up your car this time? Gather up all the bits and we'll have it done in a weekend, unless you need some shims.

    Jon,

If you want your perfect car mechanically perfect, there is only ONE place to take it :)

Your car deserves the Master 'E'!

I don't know what the wait time looks like, but it's worth a call, and definitely worth wait

7 grand for a 328 major??? Gosh, I guess I need to adjust my pricing...

Lets see. Service kit from Ricambi..$1400 includes pretty much everything you need to do the service minus the plugs

If you need a water pump, add $800 bucks plus about 1 hour labor extra if your changing the pump while doing the service.

Lets say by the time you add the cost of oil, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant, a couple of valve shims, and to recharge the A/C your at 3000 in parts. ( on the high side of things). Are you telling me that i should charge 5000 bucks labor to do a job that only takes 2 days???

I'm raising my prices as of now...

IMHO that is a open ended question- As the cars are now 25 years old + or - you have bearings (lower cam drive) all rubber hoses, gaskets, seals, belts, water pump, misc electrical all could be considered replacement items now. Tough call. Mine is being done now but I opted to pull the motor and replace many time related items. I also pulled the heads to replace head gaskets & check the heads/valves etc-. With motor out makes everything easier & more accessible as well as one helluva detail job-
Be shocked if there is no "adds" on any service now with age-
post pics one they start the work!

    Hmmmmm...

I know what I paid a few months ago at my local independent shop for a same year, same model, comparably well cared for ( I think) car.

I'm curious to see what the dealer wants for the same.

Does the quote include painting it red while they're at it?

    ( Sorry... Couldn't resist... )
