I know that there are people on this forum that have or have had both and need some advice. I am upgrading from my D40 in a couple months and have found some incredible deals on D200s. I found one on craigslist for $850 and though used it is half of the best price I have found on a D300. What are the major differences that would make it worth it to go with the D300 for 2x the cost?

I own neither but have used both. The most obvious difference is the high resolution LCD on the D300. However, the most practical difference in my opinion is the wonderful high ISO performance of the D300

That was the thing I was very impressed with, but is it worth an extra $700? I am not so sure.

I haven't used a D200 but I own a D300. I would definitely say the high ISO performance is worth the money. It could mean the difference between making the shot and not making it. I LOVE the D300.

I am debating the same exact thing right now ....
    I have found d200's with < 10k actuations for 800-900, but I have also seem <1k actuation d300 for $1325-1400
I have a feeling after all is said and done, I will go with the d300.
From what i have read in the forums the 500-600 dollar difference is worth it

    best of luck

It is definitively a hard decision, the prices of the D200s are great, the thing that worries me about going with a used D300 is why are they selling it already with less than a 1,000 shots.

The answer to that question seems to be the d700.

Possibly. You may very well see my 40D up for sale if the 5D replacement is anywhere close to as good as the D700.

But the D700 is $3500, that is at the very very steep end of Prosumer gear.

People seem to want to go the full frame route, and the 3000-3500 is a bargain compared to the d3 or Canon 1dks m3 or whatever its called.
Almosat every d300 i see for sale in the b/s forums starts like:

    'I just picked up a D700 so the D300 needs a new home. '

'I sold my d300 and have no need for these accessories since I am waiting for my D700'

'I cannot resist the move to full-frame, so am selling my perfectly fine, minty D300'

    'Making room for a D700!'

'Well I can’t resist the call of the D700.'

I wil be more than happy taking a low mileage d300 off someones hand for 300 off list

It depends what you want to use it for. I guess you are into "serious" photography. I own a D200 and like it very much. I however have some negative comments.

1- The ISO sensitivity of this machine is not very good (I am hesitating to say crap) because anything above ISO 800 does not yield very good result... So if you take pictures in low light and without flash... you may be disappointed with the D200. I read plenty of reviews saying the ISO sensitivity issues were resolved with the D300

2- The "softness" of the pictures taken. I have tweaked this camera all over but am unable so far to get "sharper" looking results, even by bumping sharpness to the max and using Raw compression. Maybe someone can help with the settings, but I find this disappointing...

    Hope this helps...

Clearly these folks are professional photographers who need to produce large size pictures... I believe the D300 is an awesome machine and would trade my D200 anytime for it ;-)
