F40 sure sucks on 1 bank

My F40 decided to drop one bank today while out for a drive. The car sure sucks on just one bank of cylinders. ;-)

The right hand “slow down” was off/on every once in a while, but no other indications of something wrong. Limped my way home. The one bank idled very smooth at about 700 rpm! Never died.

Fuses checked out okay. Began reading all the various threads on missing banks, bad fuse blocks, ECUs, etc…

Might try to swap some modules before taking it into the shop. Sure would like to avoid a tow truck ride. Too bad Brian C. doesn’t make house calls!

P.S. The day wasn’t a total loss as I took out all the red cars to play with as it was the first time they were all together in CA (vs WA).

Only problem ever had with mine... Turned out to be a bad cam position sensor.

 

Tim,

wiggle the fuel connectors on top of the tanks to see if the idle speeds up....maybe a bad connector on the fuel pump on the affected side. Your symptoms are exactly identical to mine.

 

Tm, I did see a Ferrari F40 today outside my place driving on Fillmore street in the Marina (San Francisco) was in you?

Just curious, was this F40 ever in Spokane Washington?
I saw your location and Just wanted to ask, its really a beautiful car.

 

1+ slide connector off--->slip back on. Jas relayed this method to me and it saved my a$$ while out on the road. It has to be done sorta blind though unless you climb in the bay. Took all of 5 min latch to latch.

 

Just had exactly the same problem on both banks. Both sensors replaced and problem solved

I'll indeed try this. I assume from the posts that the connectors can be reached without removing anything, and that I can actually see them so I know what I'm messing around with? I seem to remember an old post with a picture of where they are. Off to the archives again...

Jas has pics somewhere. I did it blind, worked after the first attempt. No issues since. Any luck?

 

Found the pictures from an earlier thread. Started the car and wiggled the pump connectors. The offending bank fired up. Cool. Scary.

I’m cleaning the connectors today. Saved a flatbed trip!

Of course, while researching the issue online, I came across a variety of fried fuse boxes. I’m a little afraid to investigate mine… ;-)

SWEET!!! Glad the "Jas method" worked as well for you as it did for me. I believe he had new connectors placed. I think I'll follow that route as well as the problem appears more common than one would think. Glad it worked!

Very nice stable of cars you have.

It amazes me that even with some of the quirky things that happen with Ferrari's overall they are very solid cars. Be thankful that you didn't have the rare F40 problem of it all of a sudden revving high without any warning. I know Ron Tonkin had that problem with his personal F40 many years back and that turned out to be the ECU.

I hope it is an easy fix for you. From the sounds of it I'm sure it will. Best of luck.

I'm glad you localized the problem Tim. Most dealers and parts sources do not have a parts number for a new connector and fresh connector pins...but part numbers do exist for these in the Ferrari electrical catalogue and are as follows :

pins 135312
