A couple of weeks ago, I was driving out through PA on vacation - Hershey, to be specific. They DO have red light cams out there and they are everywhere in that town! Police cruisers are all over the place. When I looked at the street lights at those intersections, the cameras were mounted on the wires (I think), along with a tiny flash bulb gizmo. Again, not an expert here, but that was what I think I was looking at. I had paid close attention to the lights to make sure I didn't get busted for accidentally running them.

From what I've read both here and elsewhere on the 'net, there are many red light cameras all over NYC, Queens, etc. But I've not heard much about Nassau and Suffolk. Does anybody know if there are any red light or speed cams in use out here?

Reason I ask is because I was on Route 110 in Farmingdale/Melville the other day when I noticed at some (not all) intersections along 110, there are small cylindrical devices hanging on the wires - in between the traffic lights and over each lane. I've never noticed them before so I don't know if they are new. They look like some sort of sensor - but I'm totally guessing here. Sorry, I don't have a photo of them but they're about 3 inches high. If these are sensors, what is their function? Are these for law enforcement or merely to monitor traffic flow? I don't think these are red light cams but does anyone know for sure?

Similarly, I've seen some sensors on poles along the Northern State and LIE. But I'm thinking those are EZ Pass scanners for the new signs they put up that give the ETA to the next big exit. Anyone can confirm this as well?

NY is buying more cameras. Lots more.

As far as Hershey & other towns: you might want to call the local town to see if they are using cameras.

Franklin Lakes has what looks like cameras on wires at the intersections.
But they are simply Radar units to help control trafffic light intervals.

Hershey is using them for sure - we saw a sign when we came in that said they have them.

Can you describe what those units in Franklin Lakes look like? I'm thinking the ones I saw on Route 110 may be very similar. I was able to take a photo of them this morning on my way to work. Unfortunately, I can't get it off the camera until I get home tonight. I'll post it later. I'm hoping that's what they are, and not actual red light cams. If that were the case, I'm sure we'd be hearing a lot about people getting unexpected summonses in the mail. People run the lights on 110 ALL the time!

I can't speak to speed cams on the Island but I do think they've got red light cams. I can confirm NYC has tons of red light cams, in fact there's a list on the web somewhere. Here's one, but not the one I was looking for http://www.photoenforced.com/ny.html

Speed cams tend to be located anywhere BUT at intersections so what you're seeing there I'm fairly certain are not those and only red light cams.

Interesting site. If I'm reading it correctly, the map shows only one red light cam further out on LI and it's in Massapequa Park. I guess the big question is how accurate is this map in terms of camera numbers and locations. Either way, that looks like a LOT of cameras by NYC and nearby!

I'm hoping what they have on Route 110 is just what Clyde suggested they might be, and nothing more sinister. I got a good picture of them this morning so I'll post it tonight.

I got caught by a light camera on RT-22 in North White Plains. The light turned red prematurely, leading me to believe they intentionally change the light quicker in order to catch more people.... nice

I have an NYPD source who furnished a list of locations in the 5 boroughs a couple years back; I've solicited an updated list so stay tuned....

here we go. I took some photos of these gadgets hanging over Route 110. They look slightly different at other intersections. You'll see some shape/size differences between them.

Have a look and see if you can tell what they are. When I zoomed in, I noticed that one points in one direction, the other is "looking" at the intersecting street. I even sent an email to "Gridlock Sam" to see if he or his staff can tell me what they are. Not sure if I will get an answer but it would be great to solve this puzzle. If anyone else has an "inside" connection that can find out for CERTAIN what these things are, I'd certainly like to know! Thanks.

Not entirely sure but I believe those small hanging devices are sensors for transmitters in emergency vehicles (Fire trucks, Ambulances and the like) They can change light to get right of way when responding. There was some problem a while ago as knockoff transmitters were being sold to civilians who used them to clear a path. The thing in Massapequa at intersection of Unqua road and Merrick went up recently. I've no Idea what it is though its within a few blocks of the firehouse. It has a lot more sensors then I'm used to seeing on a light. Nassau County legislature has voted to instal the cameras (free money) but has been having trouble getting the state govt to go along.

i have been all the way up rt 23 north recently and have seen traffic cameras all over the place on the intersections of the highway, also, many intersections all over essex, passaic, and bergen county, i do not know what the purpose of the cameras is but it is really beginning to bug me out, as i drive about 800 miles a month and for the past year and have seen them being put up or put up already all over the place

ETA to the next big exit do use EZ pass info.

Have not heard of camera enforcement in Suffolk; on 110 at Pinelawn or Old Country, red light cameras would be a gold mine.
