I drove the car for about 40 minutes and when I pulled off the freeway there was a loud back fire, then the engine stuts right off??!! The car did not re-start for about 30 minutes later, drove it home with no issues. I took it out this morning and again no issues. Any suggestion to what may have happened? Thank you.

My '82 suffered from sudden dead a few times just after I bought it. No dash lights, nothing. Couldn't find any faults, then stumbled across a battery that would short periodically. Stuck a new battery in and no problems for 10k kms.

Check the ground of the coils and the engine ground etc. Have a z car that did that on and off for years and it turned out to be a ground.

I would point my finger at the battery too or the connections to it. The newer cars (348 up)are really susceptible to batteries not being in top shape.

Agree on checking the grounds. I had an '84 Mondial QV that did something similar. Turned out that the cutoff switch in the negative ground from the battery was bad, plus the terminal on the battery and at the chassis were corroded. Got rid of the switch, bought a new negative cable, cleaned up the battery terminal and connection on the chassis, sprayed them with battery terminal protector, and also changed the grounding strap on the engine and all the electrical problems/refusal to start cleared up.

I'd concur as well. Had a Mitsu that did exactly as you describe. Corroded battery cables/poor connections and ground. New battery and cleaned up ground and no more problems. Easy, cheap place to start and most likely the problem.
