I was speaking to a Ferrari dealership (I'll withhold the name to protect the innocent) and they said the 1999 360 Modena some how appeared to be quicker than all the others after it. I asked why and he said he's not sure but we noticed it on the 1999s. Anyone hear of this before? Is there any merit to it?

The US '99 360 is void of air injectors and pre-cats.

The changes make the exhaust a little less restrictive and and a little lighter. Think of it this way, you drop 100 lb and you saved ~3% in weight. That makes it detectable but not significant.

That's the truth. Almost four years ago when I got my 99 360 I drove the 99, a 2003, and a 2002. I drove each one of them back to back several times.
They were all stock. The 99 was slightly louder and I could feel a seat of the pants power differance. The dealership could not tell me why at the time.
The 99 was a better deal as well.

Also the F1 worked just as good if not better than the other 360's! 27K miles later, no problems.

    I would highly recommend a 99 360!

If your interested you can do a search on the differences between the earlier and later 360's. All properly maintained 360's are wonderful cars however, the early cars and especially the MY99 did have a few more issues to look out for. I don't agree with Financialman's evaluation of the early or 1st. generation F1. Typically the only owners that will tell you they work as good as the later models are owners that have never experienced the 2nd. generation F1.

I agree that my 99 shifts good, I test drove a 430 and it didn't feel that much different. i thought the 430 was gonna be seamless but it wasn't

The tranny in the f430, while not seamless, is far superior to the tranny in the 360 (I've owned both and still have the 430).
If you want near-seamless performance you need a Scud or Kimi's car.

It's not just about shift times but adjustability and clutch life.

My '99 has given me a whooping 1% drop on the SD2 read out over the last year! That includes 5500 miles and several track days at WOT.
So, adjustable clutch and wear are a non-issue in my mind with the 360, any year. Have your mechanic set the clutch up correctly and drive, drive, drive!!!

I test drove a 2002 and 1999. I ended up buying the 1999. There was a noticable differnce in performance and the dealer did say the 99's would be a bit faster. However, the 2002 did shift smooeter, not as jerky. But I ceratinly would not have complained about the performance of the 02.

Yep, I bought my 99 because Dave Helms told me the same thing, the 99 are a little quicker. He spoke from his racing days and the seat of the pants feeling.....
