Actually the Socialist have nothing to do with the Schlumpfs’ demise, which was due to the death of the textile industry in Western Europe and the fact that the Schlumpfs abused company funds for their private collection.

The then right wing government stepped in (late 70s) and saved the collection by creating the Musée National de l’Automobile.

About the Mas du Clos, the track is closed for public events, but the owner can always drive his cars in his property. Hopefully, as a Fchatter indicated above, the current Prime Minister might reverse the bizarre administrative ruling.

You were a lucky man to have visited Le Mas du Clos often! When I was mentioning photos I meant for commercial purposes...

English magazine "Motor", issue of 5 September 1970, had Mas du Clos on the cover and published a four page color article written by Philip Turner with photos by Maurice Rowe. Italian magazine "Auto Capital" in the 1990s showed the entire collection on ten (10) color pages in great detail with photos from Franco Varisco and text by Manuela Piscini. The castle (inside and outside), the cars, the track, the man.

    Hi Marcel.

How hard is it to find those issues?

The Schlumpf family saved quite a few cars and many Bugatti original engine casts from the late 70s debacle. I was told there are enough parts to make a NOS Royale... Someone just bought it all (cars, parts and casts) and stored them in an old factory in the North of France.

No idea. I bought that English mag back in 1970 when I was a kid. But you can buy the Peter Vann-Antoine Prunet photo book "Fantastic Ferraris" which also covers many of Bardinon's cars. Published by EPA in France in 1987. The photos of Peter Vann are great. Book comes in a slipcase. I guess you can purchase this book from Mrs Carol Roush of Ferrari Market Letter in Stone Mountain/GA, USA. www.ferrarimarketletter.com
The Italian mag "Auto Capital" you can most probably get at one of those huge swap meets in Italy, be it Imola (12-14 September 2008) or Padova (24-26 October 2008).

I'm assuming you guys saw this, right?

    http://www.autoblog.com/2011/08/22/ferrari-250-gto-gathering-takes-over-pebble-beach/

22 of the 39 GTOs built were at Pebble Beach's Concours d'Elegance this year. It was mind blowing to see so many of them. I had not seen ONE in person before that weekend, and I got to see 22 of them at once. At an average value of $25M, this represented more than HALF A BILLION dollars line up right there.

    Totally incredible.

    That's not a 330 P4. It's a 350 Can Am with a replica P 4 Body. 0860's original P4 body is on David's "0900".

Ferrari opened that box when 0858 was unsuccessfully offered at the RM factory Auction and Ferrari clearly stated that since the Factory converted P4's 0858 and 0860 to 350 Can Am's that what they are.

For me, they are stunning totally irrespective of value. The lines of the GTO are sublime.

Another one of the great Ferrari legends has left..

He bought his Ferrari's out of passion in a time they were not considered the treasures they are now valued for.
He saw the beauty and uniqueness of these cars long before the frenzy started.

When I read the article in Cavallino 50 (when it just came out) I was hooked!

My condolences to his friends and family of whom undoubtely several will visit F.chat.

Perhaps the most legendary collector of our times.
Another one of the 'old guard' gone.
Men like that don't exist anymore (and this has nothing to do with financial strength).
His reputation will live forever though.....

My condolences to his family and friends.

Anyone have a link to a bio about the man? Think the younger guys may find that informative.

I was very sad to read that the most important Ferrari collector of the 20th century and beyond left us a few days ago.

If this section of this forum website deserves a proper thread it is this one.

I only met him on two occasions but they were very special to me and I will share them tomorrow.

    Mes condoleances à la famille.
