Fake Exhaust on California?

The july issue of EVO (http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/225024/ferrari_california.html ) quotes Ferrari Tech Director Roberto Fedeli that the stacked exhaust outlets are DUMMY FAKES, the real exhausts are inside them!


"Also high on Fedeli’s list of priorities was making sure the car sounds good to its occupants, for while Ferraris may make a spectacular noice for those outside them, Fedeli admits that more could be done to enhance the sound for those inside. To this end, the California engine’s induction system has been developed to transmit more of its glorious V8 noise into the cabin. The exhaust, conversely, has been designed so as not to be too intrusive when the roof is down, but one of the disappointments for those with keen eyes will be that those controversial stacked exhausts are in fact dummies – the real exhaust outlets hide inside them and look nothing like as meaty as you’d expect on a car like this".

 

wow that certainly throws a cat amongst the pigeons ..I wonder what else is "fake"?

 

This is nothing new and is exactly the same principle as used on the 430 Scud. Personally, I'm fine with it as this is just a road car and most people will never know or be bothered.

 

Nothing new. Porsche does the same. They are just tips..

So, will we see a California with normal tailpipes?

 

If I'm not mistaken, the original pipes from the can is also staggered as per the 'outside' arrangement. It's like the Scud's zorst arrangement whereby the actual pipe is say 40mm Diameter and then we have the 'fake' outside tips having say..80mm Dia. In the case of the Cali, IIRC from pictures somewhere, they're staggered and not even of the same size, i.e the top having a bigger bore than the lower or vice-versa...Then again, the aftermarket will most prolly jump on the bandwagon of providing alternative 'Tip Positioning' soon enuff. Vertical or Horizontal, your choice guv'.....

Same with Lexus IS-F.

 

Pointless worrying about this. On real zorts, the tips are welded on anyway and are sized accordingly. It's not big deal.

 

No big deal. The 430 tips are also oversized. Maybe at least they wont drip that nasty black exhaust liquid all over the rear valence,.

 

Clearly, "california" is Italian for "rice".

 

On my 360, the stock tips always dripped the condensation on the valence. When I upgraded my exhaust to the Factory Sport, the larger and longer tips cleared the valence and the black stuff dripped harmlessly on the ground.

Ferrari does listen and improve.

 

Somehow, that observation sounds more general than just exhaust tips.

BMW has a snorkel ported from the airbox into the cabin of the Z4. Works very well, and it's not an entirely new idea.

FWIW, this means to me that the California is very well insulated and likely has a solid feel to it.

12,000 miles/year average? We'll see.

 

Nothing new, and even Lamborghini is "guilty" of having a fake exhaust on the LP640, as well as Audi's R8. They're for style, to hide the real tips.

 

Anyone ever looked in a LP640 exhaust, It is two pipes that have been welded to one tip.
