Ok I'm talking to a used car manager at a MBZ dealership. He says he used to sell Ferrari's for years.

He has a 360 that I am interested in. I asked if there was any paint work on the car. He says there is no noticeable paint work on the car. But they put a paint meeter on and they have gotten different readings on different places on the car. But that alot of Ferrari's come from the factory like this, as if there is any perfections on the car they will paint the the area right there on the line instead of pulling the car off and painting the whole thing again.

Is there any truth to this?

    Yes and no....

Paint readings on modern Ferrari's are all over the place and the 360's seem to be the worst. They tend to be thicker on the rear edges of the trunk lid (by the window) and can vary from panel to panel and panel's all over the place. In general you find 360's range between 3.9 and 8.5 mils, though most of the panels sit in the high 4's. I have yet to polish a 360 (32 in the last year) that had consistent paint readings over the entire car.

Yes they will repaint the car on the line, but they still have a ton of imperfections in the paint, even when brand new.

Taking it a step further, 360's have troubled areas on the fenders (above the rear tires) and sometimes the roof. Over time it will look like blend marks "appear" (common on the 2004's). What you want to look for when gauging a 360 out is random spots that are very different. Lets say it jumps from 5.2 mils all the way to 14.mils in a couple inch area. This would indicate repaint and possibly bondo/filler under the paint. Also view the paint at an angle and examine the texture of the orange peel of the paint, any changes in a panel would indicate blend marks and possible body work.

Surprising. I know the '80s Ferraris have some pretty kit-car-like paintwork, but with all the robots, etc., I would have thought the factory had it up to almost Honda levels by now. ;)
