Maserati Ghibli (1966 - 1973)

I can`t see this car eligable for racing other than in the UK, where everything can race today that has 3 wheels....!

Its a typical butcherd car and I strongly assume that all this modifications came into it less than 15 years ago! Good for track days - but nuttin`mo`!!!

Well any time you make a race car of it it's butchered but what's strange is that they left the AC compressor in place.
That's a lot of uneeded weight. Surely they could have come up with a mod for that. Even an electric water pump.

Joe, its not only the electric waterpump or the a/c .....the car is far too heavy to get good results with it in races. Ferrari had their Big Bird Daytona much leightened and finally decided for an alloy body for the Competition version.

Maserati never did that and kept the heavy steel body and frame with their Ghibli. No race car for sure!!

Its the same yellow one that EMILIO have many photos of.

 

This was the fate Chassis #115.048 suffered in 2002! Burned down to the ashes on the Mulholland Drive in L.A.! A real pitty as it was one of the rare early cars with Rudge-knock-offs!

Green Maserati Ghibli from Peccati in Famiglia (1975). Image is poor but I think it has big wheels and it looks lower too. Look at the last minute - am I right? Registration is PD16 8497 (if real) - Maybe Walter knows it?

Not really, it is done all the time in the US, although in some cases not legally. But there are so many places in the Western US that are perfect for traveling at those speeds. One of my favorites is from the Nevada State Line to Salt Lake City on RT 80. 100 miles of flat and straight past the Bonnieville Salt Flat. How fast can your car go?

For a few years Montana didn't have a daytime speedlimit. Of course now because of the BS fuel prices the safety nazis are back trying to impose 55 mph again. If Obama wins that will surely be one of the first things that signals the begining of a world wide recession that will make the 70's seem like good times.

You say "...a few years...!" Ughhh...we are blessed that we had no speed limitation on 90% of all roads until 1995, doesn`t matter with a conservative or left-wing gouverment. From them on this was changed -from the conservatives (so, please- NO politics here!) Today Germany has a speed limitation on 80% of its roads. But the rest is .......flat out (if possible!).

It was with Kohl! Schroeder was from the SPD, the "left/red" party.

One thing I should make mention of is that I recently did some high speed driving in my (euro spec) Ghibli SS with my new GPS on board. To my amazement the speedometer in the Ghibli was very accurate, only off by about 2 KLM per hour.

I just found it on a French forum... Black & white photos of that period are so familiar, so sometimes it's surprising to discover the colors of those cars.

 

A few Ghibli photos from a recent car show I attended.
The first one is a bit odd as the front bumper looked like it was gold plated.
