How does Michael Phelps keep breaking world records? How does anyone? Is it genetics, training or technique? Possibly high tech drugs?

Swimming pool design. Deeper than normal, more spillover space, larger flotation barriers between lanes. That reduces the size of the waves going against the swimmers so they can go faster. Similar to how a boat travels faster on smooth water vs. waves.

Wasn't there something they did to the suits, so it would help, I remember reading about it on here or another forum. Maybe someone can post the link, I don't remember where I saw it. I'm not saying just the suit is helping, everything above is a factor as well.

They were discussing it a few nights ago. Part of it is his physiology. Look at his body and arm length.

They had a report on him tonight on NBC5 in Dallas about his daily diet. He eats 10,000 calories a day. His metabolism must be phenomenal. They said that if he slowed down his workout routine he would gain 4 lbs a week.

My son said something about his record of winning and setting new world records. He said, "If they win the event and set a new world record they should get a platinum medal, not a gold". Hmmmm, interesting thought.....

I'm curious of what his lung-capacity is and his other respiration/blood-oxygen figures. He indeed is special. . .

Suits help, but they don't always wear the same suits, either. I noticed Phelps wore a full-body for the relays, but just the lowers for the individuals. I'd be interested to know the science behind that decision. Also, did you look at his daily regimen? He does 2400 meters warmup and 1000 meters warmdown for each race. So he's swimming more than an extra mile for each event, except in the case of last night when they're an hour apart. I would think a guy like that would make a hell of a triathlete.

Maybe it's a conspiracy and all the athletes are taking these same high tech drugs. It's not just MP that's breaking records. Look at all those that are finishing second and third behind him that would have broken records had Michael not finished in front of them. Then look at the women's events, there are records being shattered over there too.

There's a lot to it. Pool design is HUGE. The pool in Beijing is 3 meters deep (instead of 2), it has a larger gutter system to divert simmer wakes, the jets that recirculate the water in the pool are deeper than most which reduces turbulence on the surface of the pools, the start blocks are extra skid resistant so the swimmers get a little edge on getting into the pool, then there is the Laser swim suits which can cut 100ths or even 10ths off of a swim. Add it all up and you are going to see LOTS and LOTS of swimming world records broken before the end of the Olympics.

Michael has swum 5 events, won 5 gold medals, and set 5 world records. Even if he dosen't get all 8 golds that he is shooting for I would be willing to bet that the world records in those other events fall no matter who wins them. Although I would have to say it would be cool to see him walk away with all golds.

+1 on his body. Look at how massive his shoulders are, besides his arm length. He has so much shoulder strength to use. Plus his muscle fibers are also one of his advantages. Atheletes have very special traits.

I'm not surprised it's 10K calories, I would have guess around at least 7500 calories a day. He needs every bit of that. I'm sure he has a good metabolism, but when you're competing on his level you need a continual supply of fuel to feed your body.

They said today that his normal breakfast is:
    3 egg sandwiches
    2 cups of coffee
    a 5 egg omlette
three slices of french toast with powdered sugar
three chocolate chip pancakes with syrup.

I would explode or just upchuck if I tried to put down even half that amount. Amazing. His metabolism must be 5 times that of a normal good athlete.

as if i weren't big enough already, if i were to eat that breakfast, AND workout, i would still gain weight and fat, that's what i call a breakfast! :) here's to hoping phelps pulls off the eight golds, and the urinalisys (considering the vast majority of people seem to question every athletic achievement nowadays) :D

They have to take a drug test after each event they compete in. Immediately following the event. That should keep most of the stuff out......Most I said, not all......

One minute ago, Glenn Beck said that his father abandoned the family when Michael was 9.

The commentators were talking about why that is. Apparently the suit gives the best results when you keep your body straight and in the water like a fish so wearing the full body suit is ideal for freestyle and back stroke. When doing the butterfly and breast stroke there really isn't an advantage to having the whole body suit because your upper body isn't staying in line with your lower body and isn't staying in the water.

The new "laser suit" he wears is responsible for something like 40 new records in many categories and age groups around the world........not all of them are his. Doesn't mean he wouldn't win races without it........he just might not set records.
