I have just come across an F40 sold in December 2007 Gstaad Bonhams.

    see http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=EUR&screen=lotdetailsNoFlash&iSaleItemNo=3712176&iSaleNo=15485&iSaleSectionNo=2

OK, I know it is NOT a real F40LM but what a mouth watering prospect;a race engine lovingly built to 3.6 LM spec by an Italian specialist based in Padova Italy (across the road from Michelotto!) , LM bodywork, brakes, suspension and digital display.Plus the car gets sold for the price of a nice road F40 and they throw in the original low low mileage engine for good measure.

Tried to find some other photos of this car but nothing coming up on the net.Anyone know anything more about this car or where it is?

    Why the intrigue?
Just want to know a bit more about it including 3.5 litre engine conversion and interior.A car like that must be known to quite a few people surely.Any F40 which is near LM spec and look AND is ROAD LEGAL is very special indeed and worthy of interest on this forum and to F40 fans in particular.

I've never seen an F40 in Black, were there any delivered from Ferrari in Black?

PS - a search shows these posts on the F40 being delivered in anything but red

Its funny as I think the fact that most F40's are in red, I crave to see it in another colour and end up thinking it looks better than the red. If i had an F40, I would want it in any colour bar the red it is in, just because most are red. Silver, Black, Grey, Blue (I wish) all look better in my opinion.

Can someone photoshop an F40 in some striking colours, its a car i have never seen photoshopped (yes i know there are reasons for that) but candy apple red would be interesting, dark metallic blue, light metallic green, FXX wrap colours for instance, compare the old with the new, see if it works but i suspect the dark subtle colours will work best, rich metallic blue would be interesting.

    Regards,

    Matthew

But is it road legal? I was seriously tempted by this car but Bonhams Paris office were having trouble getting any details on it, and certainly couldn't confirm it was road legal. Made me wonder why the seller was being so awkward about giving them access to the car.

I have spoken to the company which modified the car in Padena, and they rebuilt the engine to race 3.5 litre specification (not 3.6 litre as stated by Bonhams) and installed straight cut gears.
I have found pre auction pictures on the Bonhams site of the car from different angles and although there is no picture of the interior I have loooked carefully at an angled shot and the instrument console appear to be standard and not digital as in the LM/GTE.The spec says it is digital but I don't see it.

I have also found a You Tube video of the car crawling along a country lane.

    It is apparently road legal.

It sold for approx £250,000 ($500,000) dollars including buyers premium. But the sale included the original 3000km engine ( I don't quite figure where the race prepared engine came from other than it was rebuilt to race spec) as well as the original seats. On the basis the owner will 'only' receive net £210,000 ($420,000) I think someone could have cut a good deal if they could have bought the car and engine from the owner without an auction sale;the engine and seats combined must surely be worth together £25,000 ($50,000) which would stand the car at about £185,000.Not big money for a monster F40 in a monster colour.

Yes I knew it didn't go for that much, although I would have to pay import duty as well. Pity Bonhams couldn't confirm that it was road legal, oh well I'm sure something else will come along that takes my fancy.
