I'm looking for some high quality built models 1:18 model cars. I've heard that AutoArt, Kyosho, and Hotwheels Elite are some of the higher quality manufactures. Many models by those manufactures seem to be fairly priced for the quality at $50-$110 per model. Would these manufactures be considered to be "bang for the buck" makes, and does anyone have some feedback to offer for me?

I'm moving up from the $20 Maisto, and can tell from pics that the higher quality is something else. When I saw pictures of a fellow f-chatters new AA Veyron, I thought it really seemed like a tribute to the real thing and not just a recreation.

At first I would like to purchase a couple Ferrari Models and slowly add other models little by little. Another thing that would interest me is repainting some models that I plan on buying to specific colors that I would like. Is it possible to disassemble similar 1:18 to paint? Also are there any guides on what steps to take in such a process?

What if I wanted to switch the wheels or another feature of the car? Is there anywhere to buy misc. parts like BBS Challenge wheels, or an F40 LM spoiler in 1:18?

Hopefully I can get this underway, and advice to help a fellow tifosi is appreciated! :)

I plan on starting off with a Avio blue 430 Scuderia and Titanium on red Ferrari Enzo Ferrari.

I believe this is Avio, but does it sound like a good deal?

I know that I would have to repaint an Enzo in order to have one in Grigio Titanio. For the mean time I will find a nice one with red interior to make the repaint easier.

Other models that I will be keeping a sharp eye for later on include:
McLaren F1 (Seem to be pretty rare models at this point.)
Pagani Zonda F (I can't find any in 1:18th, are there plans for any to be produced in the future?)
    Lamborghini LP640
    Porsche Carrera GT
    Ferrari F40
    Lamborghini Miura
    and so on.

What are the best places to shop for these? (At this point I am mainly looking through eBay)

The best Carrera GT I have seen is the AutoArt, though I believe Kyosho or someone else has a pretty good one. McLarens are tough to find because the models are becoming rarer. BTW, avoid trying to get any Sauber C9 race cars. Bid wars can get pretty high, so unless you really want it, be prepared to dish out some dough.

I have disassembled diecasts and repainted them. It's not easy, I've only tried it on simple models like Buragos UTs and Jouefs. These are basically held together by for phillips head screws. More sophisticated cars from Hot Wheels Elite, Auto Art and Kyosho are bound to be more difficult.

Painting diecast metal is a lot trickier than painting plastic models. Original paint must be completely stripped using any commercial product and the bare metal should be primed and painted using spray paints designed for application on metal, Some have used actual boidy paint intended for full sized autos.

I recommend using an airbrush, it's much easy to get smooth coats that are not too thick than trying to spray out of a can. Two or three thin coats is best, even better if you wet sand between coats. Remember it's easy to over do it, four or five coats might be required for a good finish on a real car but they'd look too thick on a scale car.

A topcoat of gloss clearcoat will give an excellent gloss if applied carefully. When it's all thoroughly dried a good soft car wax will enhance your paint job and protect your finish.

So far I have not been able to duplicate the kind of finish you get from the typical Kyosho diecast but practice makes perfecto.

BTW-don't overlook CMC's 250GT SWB in Rosso Red or Fly Yellow, it's really fantastic.

Which manufacturer is rumoured to be making the RGT? That'd be amazing if they did, I'd really like to get my hands on one

I saw a copy of it made on ebay, someone just put it together themselves...it was a stock maisto murcielago, painted black with 2 blobs of plastic as the wings (the one above the car and below the car), the rims were from the maisto Gallardo SL and glued on (so they wouldn't roll)...asking 75 USD!

I think this website might help you with some parts, transkits, rims, etc. I've never done business with them before and I think they are located in Europe.
