Last major was 12/04 and 12,000 miles ago. I bought the car 3 months ago and put 3,500 of the 12,000 miles on it myself.

It probably "looks good", but you cannot be certain on the real condition of it mate. :):)

Looking at the back of the belt doesnt really tell you much. Timing belts usually sheer the teeth off the front. Even if you had access to look at the front of the belt and look at the teeth, it would still be VERY hard to diagnose the condition of the belt.

With age and miles on them, they can sheer teeth at any time. But I dont worry too much, the belt is 4 years old and 12,000 miles. Major is due next year in April you said? :):)

I would be more concerned about that oil leak if it were leaking into the cam belt area. But looking at your pics, it does not look like it is. Lucky, because oil can get in there and "oil soak" the cam belt and cause premature failure. :):)

Yes. I was hoping to wait until April to do the major even though all the local shops are telling me that it is way overdue.

Experience with the 355 is THE reason Ferrari went to 3 year belt service. I agree on many other models it is too short a life but not on 355 and 360. Besides the belt is but one of many things in there that need attention.

Lol. Well my first job, before I can get the service, is to get a non-chipped ECU so the local guys will even work on the car.

Thanks for the pointer. I think I will do this. My motto used to be "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," but I think, now that I own a Ferrari, I'm going to change my motto to "If it ain't broke, it will be."

Well, I say again, I'm and Engineer, not a Mechanic. This time, I tried to get the alternator out, but the top bolt will not budge. Since I'm on jack stands, I cannot get a good angle to get the leverage I need to try to break it loose. So I decided to try to work on the alternator without removing it from the vehicle. As I was trying to remove the nut holding the post, it stripped the threading on the post. Now I can't remove it since it just spins and will not catch on the threads. I'm wondering if I can take out the remaining bolts on the cover and pull off the cover and pull the post out at the same time. It seem like it might already be loose from me trying to remove the nut.

Hacksawed the bolt. Now I am stuck using the 6mm bolt. Hopefully it will still work.

I am able to connect the cable to the 6mm bolt. Is there a reason I shouldn't use the 6mm bolt. I saw in the alternator rebuild thread that someone else had used the 6mm bolt as well.

    Dude,

You need to slow down and think before you act. Measure twice cut once and think about what you are trying to do. You are destroying too many parts ( I read your other thread) and it is costing you money. Your early escapades into Ferrari repair are going to lead you to a catastrophic failure of something. Ferraris were built by people who drank lots of wine at lunch. So if at first you can't figure something out...stop...have a beer and think about it. The alcohol will free your mind to think like an Italian...then voila!

On another note no offense intended but your mechanical skills are suspect so please check how you are lifting and supporting your car, ( a car falling will kill you) where you are drilling and cutting, (look out for fuel lines and wires) how sockets are mounted on impact tools (knuckle joint sockets spin off impact wrenches and break your teeth). As a beginner, on a tool, never use more than the amount of force you would need to arm wrestle a 12 year old. If you need more than that you need the proper tool. Judicious applications of force is a more advanced technique.

The brotherhood is strong for 348/355 ......"ask first".......... someone here has already fixed what you have not "yet" broken.

Finally, there is no "belt inspection." Just replace them every 3 years or more often if you are tracking your car. I ran a serious trackcar only 348 and changed my belts annually.

Oh yea? No one helped me when I took a link aka about an inch out of my belt so it would be tighter. Worked out fine but getting to it with only a swis army knife and a pack a double mint gum was a *****!!!

Works for me! Just don't drink too much and over analyze it ;)

Autolectrics in Campbell could probably come up with a replacemnet 8mm stud for the regulator. Stop by with the old part and see what they say.

Tom, where is the thread for your check engine light? I was going to suggest trying something but not here.

First, it must be incredibly hard to work on the alternator in situ - best of luck and be careful!!! Second, if you ordered the correct regulator from Holcombe Armature Co. (P/N 11-RN-10 ND, 70 Amp, 113 mm OD) it will have the proper 8 mm stud.

I didn't see the thread about the RN-10 until it was too late. I bought the RN-02 recommended in http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124504&highlight=transpo
Anyway, everything is done and back together. I just hope the 6mm stud will not be a problem. If it is an issue, then I will have to pull the alternator again and change the stud.

Sorry Tom. My fault! It was a really long and convoluted thread. I should have just posted the correct part numbers. I'll do better next time. I'm glad everything worked-out for you.
