    Hello everybody,
This is my first thread and I have an Engine Oil question to ask,
I just purchased a 1990 348TS about a month and half ago and since the Engine Oil is almost a year old I want to change it.
This car come from Seattle and uses a Helix Shell grade 5-40. Since I live in Las Vegas and is really hot here, would it be better to go higher as 10-40 or 20-50 and what Oil brand should I use for this heat ?
All the oil guru out there ... please advice.
    Thanks,
    Roberto

As these cars get older and Im talking the 355 as well they need thicker oil. Im using motul 300v... 15W-50.

Castrol 10w40 works fine for me.

Have you looked at Redline? Like its performance.

I got the Mobil 1 5w-30 synthhetic at Sam's club ($31 for a six quart case). Seems to work fine for me.

I would think Ferrari has already accounted for temperature variations in recommending a multi-viscosity oil like a 5w-40.

I've run both Royal Purple 10w-40 and Mobil 1 10w-40 with no problems. I'm not an expert on oil but I probably would not deviate too far from the factory recomended 10w-40.

Hello Roberto. I use Mobil 1 5w-50 Synthetic oil. :):)

I live in Outback Australia where it gets to 113F daily in the Summer time. I have had no issues so far using that grade of engine oil out here in the 'heat'. So I think any good synthetic 5w-50 or 10w-40 oil will be fine for your 348 out there in Vegas! :):)

Redline all the way, baby! And don't forget to put it in your trans too - no, not the engine oil, but the same product line. :)

I have been told by a good friend of mine, an old mechanic that knows about Ferrari's, since the car is aged, I would be better using the mineral Castrol 20w50, not even a syntetic engine oil.
What do you guys think about that ?
    Please advice ...
    Thanks,
    Roberto

Redline 5W40 for the engine and Redline Shockproof or 75W-90NS for the gearbox (to preempt your next question? ;) )

Actually, Ferrari recommends 5w-40 synthetic, Shell Ultra Helix.

Ya I was wondering about that. The repair manual that I have says 10w-40 Helix. I wonder if different documents say different things?

I have not read positive reviews of the Shell brand oils.

I guess if its synthetic it makes sense for Ferrari to recommend 5W-40 but most car manufacturers for non synthetic 5W-30 ambient temperature range is -25 to 30 ferh and 10W-30 for 0-110 ferh.
