LeRoi Moore, sax player in the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday afternoon (August 19). He was 46.

Moore suffered serious injuries in an ATV accident on June 30 outside the band's home base of Charlottesville, Virginia, including a punctured lung and broken ribs. Moore returned to the hospital last month due to complications.

TMZ reported that the band is scheduled to perform on Tuesday night as planned at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Béla Fleck and the Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin has been filling in for Moore since his accident, according to the band's Web site.

The band posted the following statement on its Web site Tuesday night: "We are deeply saddened that LeRoi Moore, saxophonist and founding member of Dave Matthews Band, died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, August 19, 2008, at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles from sudden complications stemming from his June ATV accident on his farm near Charlottesville, Virginia. LeRoi had recently returned to his Los Angeles home to begin an intensive physical rehabilitation program."

Moore was a jazz musician in Charlottesville when he joined forces with Matthews early in 1991. The band released its first album, Remember Two Things, on its own Bama Rags label late in 1993. That album was recorded live, and DMB have gone on to become one of the most successful live acts in North America.

Not a fan of their music, but definitely too young to die. Dying of complications from a accident almost 2 months ago is a strange way to go. RIP.

In a somewhat related incident. My grandpa had a stroke about 6 months before he died. He started making a recovery about 3 months in, and then on month 5 he just out of the blue took a turn for the worse and was dead within a month.

I've noticed that with a lot of people that are on their way out. Morbid but it seems like the body tries to make one last attempt to recover and if that doesn't work...it's a quick downward spiral from there :-/

Life is short...live it up while you can.

Given the history of trauma, likely prolonged immobilisation +/- infection or +/- other medical comorbidities, it's entire surmisable that a large clot could have developed in his leg(s) and travelled to his lungs.

Very sad, but again not entirely uncommon.

Totally bummed, he was too young. IMO, there's the Dave Matthews Band, and then there's everyone else. Their live music is incredible and it gets better every year. LeRoi was a good saxophonist and he contributed so much to the DMB. My sisters were at the show at Staples Center the day he died. Despite the somber mood, they said it was still a great show. They played all of LeRoi's favorite songs.
Seeing the Dave Matthews Band live is an incredible experience. I've seen them 8 times, and despite LeRoi's passing, I hope they will continue to tour.
