My newly acquired '78 308 has a few additional gauges that are not in my manual. On the left side, lower dash where the clock and oil temp are illustrated in the manual, i have a vacuum gauge and an Amps gauge. In the center consol, just below the AC vent is the clock and the Oil temp gauge.

The Vacuum gauge and the Amps gauge don't move- don't work. The wiring diagram does not include these gauges.

Where are these gauges wired too? What does is the Vacuum gauge suppose to be reporting?

    I'll post pic's if necessary

    Thanks for any help

    Dave

    Hello Dave,
It sounds like someone has tried updating your 308 to 308qv spec, which I can understand as I personally prefer the qv centre console with the gauges mounted between driver and passenger - a mod that can easily be removed should you wish to go back to original without damaging the car.
If you wish to connect the vacuum gauge you will need to take a hose and with a suitable adaptor take it from the inlet manifold, maybe from the brake servo connection, please check first as I have only fitted these on cars with one inlet manifold in the past.
The ammeter is just a straight forward connection. These two are the additional gauges fitted, the clock and oil temp were standard and located under the dash.
    Regards,Tom

    Hi Tom,
Thanks for the quick reponse. Is the Amp gauge connect to alternator, battery or one of the fuse box leads- or other?

As he said the 1978 should only have the oil temp and clock below the dash to the left of the steering column.

These same two gauges I believe moved to the console in later years.

You'll have to find the wiring diagram online for the brand of gauge? Why you'd need to monitor vacuum I have no idea, only the brake booster uses it on our cars????

Two of my cars had ammeters or voltmeters added at clock location but truthfully restoring to original would be my first choice....

    Dave,
The bottom line is those gauges are not factory original to the car. So you are sort of "on your own"...

    Understand
I need to see some pic's of the interiors of the 78 308's.

The extra gauges fill the voids and clean it up.

My 365 gtc4 is kept in original spec condition, the 308 with 35,700 documented miles is my alternate driver.

Has anyone pulled the speedo and was able to remove front glass? All the gauges are in excellent condition except for the speedo which looks like it just needs to be wiped down on the inside.

    Thanks,
    dave

Here is a pic of the left part, there's nothing more than this two gauges and especially nothing on the console on a 308 carb. Of course, these ones are euro spec.
Speedo glass are set (not sure about the english word), so even if it look easy to do, be carefull...
    hope this could help.

Newman just over hauled his speedo. Pics and description in the most recent pages of his mega thread on his 308 restoration.

ammeters in older cars are famous for fires, as they have the direct load of the battery and alternator. i would advise against hooking it up, and i would remove the wires from the the power source. if they are there and "wrapped up " somewhere they could still chaffe to ground. a hot wire from the alternator can short to ground and start the insulation of the wire on fire, which will send the whole car up in flames.

the early muscle cars that i had had ammeters, and i took the bastards out and threw them away.

+3. You said just about word for word what I would have wrote. Rip that stuff out of the car before it wrecks something

There are remote sensing ammeters so you dont have to run heavy wires to the gauge, but as suggested they arent really needed. A voltmeter will tell you if your charging or not, and really, thats what the charge light tells you.

is the speedo just pushed into the cluster face plate or is there some sort of holding bracket behind the cluster face that holds in the speedo? I can just barely rotate the guage, but i don't want to forcefuly pull on it thinking is just pulls out

There is a bracket and thumb screws holding each of the gauges from the rear. Yes, they come out the front, but not until you remove the thumb screws and brackets from behind. ;)
