For those unfamiliar with ALMS qualifying, there are two twenty minute sessions (GT1 & GT2) & (LMP1 & LMP2) - no nonsense qualifying . . twenty minutes and the fastest car gets their respective pole.

This is really good, possibly will bring more fan attention to ALMS. Live is very good, I just can't get into tape delays.

Nothing on that site about today's ALMS qualifying either but I did add it too my 'favorite's' list just incase, thank's.

 

Unfortunately I wasn't at home to try this, but from comments on other forums it seemed to be pretty good. It was one heck of a good qualifying, especially for Audi since with the tarmac coming up between turn 4 & 5, it took both their cars out in practice - #2 Audi even sustained a cracked tub which had to be replaced (that's some kind of blow). Here's the report from Audi:

Audi driver Dindo Capello has turned the former Canadian Grand Prix circuit at Mosport into the fastest racetrack of the American Le Mans Series. In Saturday’s qualifying, he beat last year’s pole time with the over 650-hp Audi R10 TDI by almost two seconds. With an average speed of 138.116 mph, Capello recorded the fastest lap ever in the history of the American Le Mans Series thus beating the record which his team-mate Lucas Luhr had established just a fortnight ago at Road America.

Driving the “sister” car, Marco Werner made sure that both Audi R10 TDI prototypes will start from the front row of the grid on Sunday at 3:05 p.m. local time (9:05 p.m. in Germany). The German was a mere 94 thousands of a second slower than Dindo Capello. The Italian celebrated his tenth pole position in the American Le Mans Series having captured his last pole exactly one year ago also at Mosport.

The performance of the Le Mans-winner was very special because he did not drive at all in the last practice before qualifying as a part of the track surface had broken up and the session had to be stopped prematurely.

The two Audi R10 TDI prototypes incurred significant damage due to the tarmac already the day before giving the Team Audi Sport North America considerable overtime. The monocoque of the car of Lucas Luhr and Marco Werner even had to be changed overnight because a repair of the damaged tub at the race track was not possible. Hence the joy was even greater following the perfect qualifying result.

Thunderstorms are predicted for race day at Mosport. Audi won with the Audi R10 TDI at Mosport in 2006. Last year, Dindo Capello and Allan McNish enjoyed a commanding lead before dropping to second place just minutes from the end of the race due to a problem with the shifting system.

Quotes after the qualifying at Mosport

Dindo Capello (Audi R10 TDI #1): “After the terrible weekend Allan (McNish) and I had at the Nürburgring it is so nice to be back in a top position. For me this pole is really special because I could not run in the session before qualifying. I was a little bit afraid, but on my first flying lap I understood that the car was good and a like it. I had just to push. I had a big power slide out of the last corner and I was afraid that this could have cost me the pole, but at the end it was good enough.”

Emanuele Pirro (Audi R10 TDI #1): “We could not hope for more. We have both cars in front. Both Dindo (Capello) and Marco (Werner) did a really extraordinary job: To put both Audis on the front row on this track which is normally not the best for us, is really exceptional. We are very happy with the set-up for the race. We start from the best position, let’s just hope it will not rain tomorrow.”

Lucas Luhr (Audi R10 TDI #2): “I am actually quite satisfied. Marco (Werner) is of course a bit disappointed, because definitely more would have been possible. We’ve all seen that, but that’s racing: Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes unlucky. Our day was tough but good. After what happened yesterday we can be happy with second position on the grid. We have a good car for the race. I’m looking forward for tomorrow.”

Marco Werner (Audi R10 TDI #2): “Of course we are satisfied to have both cars on the front row. Personally I’ve a fairly thick neck because of Mister Montagny who cost me two tenths of a second. This would have been pole, but the most important thing is we have both Audis in front.”

Dave Maraj (Team Director Audi Sport North America): “It was a great team effort especially after what happened yesterday. Both cars were back in good shape for qualifying and both drivers did a fantastic job. Congratulations to the drivers and the whole team for their hard work.”

wow wow wow, there was some amazing racing going on. Congrats to Audi for taking yet another overall victory. Those cars carry unbelievable speed down the straights. Superb drive from David Brabham as well. Truly agressive during all of his stints. Miracle pass on Dumas and then slipping through to second and a class win because of De Feran's little fuel problem (which was really unfortunate for him and his team). And of course, lets not forget Risi's first class victory in ALMS in 2008! Woohoo! Melo was on fire!

Compared to this, the GP at Valencia was a total bore.

 

Totally agree.
Excellant racing and I get to see a Ferrari sportscar driven right and an aussie win.
Far better than any F1 race the last couple of years.
Rode the Brabham in car camera all race. Completely immersive experience.
Maybe the #71 and #45 cars got a bit too rough. We don't want the driving we saw from Sebring onwards last year to return to the series. Only negative from a great race.

 

This had to be the absolute BEST race of the day - excitement all the way thru the final lap. WOW

With both cars warned about the bumping, I really believe that the #71 pushed Jorge out of the turn at the end. It will be interesting to see what IMSA has to say.

Hard to believe only three races remaining in the season.

Excellent race. Brabham was on another plane. To me the #71 was already on the inside (on the final lap) and contact was inevitable (the other previous laps were avoidable), but I'm not the one to convince.

Tafel Ferrari #71 received a penalty and Lizard's #45 moves up to 3rd place . . .good for Jorge and Wolfe.

Was so lucky to see this race in person, what a good time!

 

This race and qualifying was much more exciting than the F1 race..yawn.

 

That battle in the last ten minutes or so was amazing. I really wish we'd see more of that in F1...or any where for that matter.

Mosport is a definite favorite of ours - glad you had a good time . . . we're definitely planning on going back next year (just wish it was a Saturday race instead of Sunday).

Of late the sportscar racing - FIA-GT, LMS and ALMS have all been battles up to the end!! The drive by Brabs was absolutely AWESOME - he's had several of those lately.....be sure to get on the ALMS site after September 1st and vote for your driver!!!

Mark, you headed to Road Atlanta in October???? you really need to go with the fantastic line-up of cars this year - all reports have it being the absolute best race of the season.

Brabham's battle with the Penske Porsche was thrilling as he and Romain swapped positions back n forth, championship implications shading the fight. What a ride that in car cam is! No adds or cam view changes out of your control.
Just the rhythmn of Mosport track and the momentum of the Acura swinging pendulum like against that of Dumas.
By races end I knew which GT-2 cars were safe and which likely to cause us trouble as we came through again and again. What a fascinating insight into the GT-2 race itself. Can't wait for the next.
