Kimi Raikkonen believes his chances of ending his seven-race victory drought at Valencia are far from over despite more mistakes in qualifying again leaving him disappointed with his grid slot.

The world champion had expressed his determination to solve the qualifying problems which have left him down in sixth place at each of the last two grands prix in the lead up to this weekend – but again couldn’t match team-mate Felipe Massa’s pace on Saturday.

He admits a number of lock-ups on his crucial final Q3 lap cost him a higher position, but was nevertheless far from downcast due to his confidence in the F2008’s race pace.

"Fourth place is not what I was looking for, but it's definitely not the end of the world,” he said.

“I could have been higher up the grid but on my last run in Q3, I locked the wheels at a few points and lost valuable time: it was nothing dramatic, but at this circuit, a small error is very costly.

“I still think I can be in the fight for the win, especially if I manage to get a good start.

“We have a good car, which should be especially competitive in the race."

Massa’s pole position put the Italian squad in the perfect place to try and end McLaren’s three-race victory sequence, which has seen its British rival move to within 11 points of it in the constructors’ championship.

Team boss Stefano Domenicali was satisfied with the squad’s overall qualifying result and says it is now vital it produces an error-free team performance during what he anticipates to be a testing inaugural Valencia race.

“It was a shame for Kimi, who could have been a bit higher up the order, even though fourth place cannot be considered a bad result,” he said.

“All things considered, a good day for the team, even though we are well aware that it’s the race that counts.

“Tomorrow, we can expect a sweaty afternoon and not just because of the heat!

“We will have to pay great attention in managing all the possible scenarios that could occur.

“The decisive factors will be the usual ones – reliability first and foremost, strategy, performance and the work of the team and drivers.

“On top of that there will be the unknowns that go with a track being raced on for the first time.

“For our part, we will do our utmost to try and bring home the best possible result in terms of the championship.”

I hope he's right. Job 1 is to keep his nose clean through the first few corners.

as long as he can get around kubica i think he'll have a chance. you know lewis will not allow massa to pull away and if kimi can keep pace, and possibly stay out a couple laps longer he can probably leapfrog lewis during the 1st round of stops, and hopefully massa during the 2nd round. it all hinges on a good start.

Guys I know it sucks to have info when you don't want it but it happens for every race and this is ONLY qualifying.

I know, I know FC has more goodies than the Racing section but the headlines reach the first page and it's at the top and we all know this you guys are partly to blame.

Absolutely correct. What else can one expect on race weekend? I agree that a SPOILER heading would have been better, but on race weekend, I avoid this section unless I already know the results.

I was happy to hear that James Hunt got the pole for tomorrow.

    I hope so...

secondly; I dont want to be rude, but if you dont want to know the results, why look at the racing section in the first place? granted, thread title could have been 'I can still win, says kimi'...

    Suggestion:

Instead of blaming other users...just follow the rules. DON'T POST RACING RESULTS IN THREAD TITLES.

it pops up on the top page. I should be able to watch qualifying when I have 90 minutes to do so. I should be able to go on Fchat for a few minutes to see if someone has posted a reply to my Rocky Mountain Concours thread. I have to go by R&T to get there.

Just follow the rules. That's not too much to ask. Many feel the rules apply to everyone but them. the rule breaker should know better...it's not the person who is complying with the rules to guess when somebody will ignore them. If we all don't police this it will just be a rule that is ignored. Is that really what you want?

Qualifying is ususally more exciting than the actual race. Valencia looks like a track where qualifying could be key. After all it is a street course like Monaco.

    Unfortunate thread title.

However one can't wonder if entering the thread in order to post a rebuke doesn't weaken the rebuke.
Before entering its only an implication that kimi qual'd 4th to impinge on the viewing pleasure. Gaining further knowledge of the outcome could ruin it completely.

    Balancing pleasures and motivations, eh?
Guess we're all monkeys at heart.
