For your future plans, there is a nice backroad from Great Barrington to Rte 20/Mass Pike -

after leaving LRP, go straight through GB on Rte 7
after downtown GB, bear Right onto Rte 23
Rte 23 winds thru Monterey, Otis, and Blandford before ending up on Rte 20.
Follow Rte 20 East for about 4 miles and you'll come to signs for the Mass Pike in Westfield. I wouldn't recommend following Rte 20 past this point because then you end up in downtown Springfield.

I also take Rte 9 sometimes all the way from Springfield to Framingham, then get on 128. That's a pretty good ride because it's rural (except for Worcester) and you can make a nice loop around the Quabbin.
