GOOD idea, but the maintenance costs would be frightful.

I have had two Porsches so far, a 996 GT2 and a 993 C4 Cabrio. I found the 996 to be very "plastic" in its physical aspect, almost cheap crap in the interior, insanely so for what was a 200k dollar car once fitted with all the accoutrement that it should have come with here in the States. It was much fun to drive, no complaints on torque or speed, but not meant for daily driving.
The 993 is better made, looks better, has nowhere near the power, but is huge fun to drive. Mine was a low mileage neglected car that came from an estate, and needed mainly cosmetics. But, I have upgraded suspension, wheels, etc. The car handles extremely well, and its lack of oomph actually makes it more fun to drive, requiring you to get on it; the shifter is wonderful in my estimation, and the interior of better quality, although a bit plastic; the exterior has more of the bank vault quality you associate with German cars before Mercedes turned into Chrysler.
I like the aesthetic of the 993 better as well, and as far as I know, it is more desirable than a 996 on the used market. No doubt any one of these you buy will require some attention-- they are now older cars-- but a joy to drive once set up properly. I use mine as a daily. Largely bulletproof.

So how would I add XM and Bluetooth (two things I absolutely want)?

Don't think. Just buy the car.You will look mango juicy when you try to sell a property.

Roll up in a 911 buying or selling and you look like you know your ****.

Where you are at now, looking like money is money. What looks more money, a guy in a BMW 328 or a guy in a 996? They may cost the same, but screw that.

What about an M3? They get very good mileage, are super fun, back seat, great handling and good power, good resale, and very understated (i.e. unless you know what it is, it looks just like any other BMW). Or an M5 for that matter. The newest gen M5 is a phenomenal car.

XM sat radio is easy........Bluetooth I don't now anything about. You can replace the stereo head unit.....but it may not talk to the PCM module in the nav system. Talk to a Porsche dealer for the corrrect answers on that.

    I don't know...

I drove a friends C6 ZO6 for 2-1/2hrs a month or too back and on cement highways I could barely hear myself think. On regular pavement it wasn't too bad.... I didn't get on it too much, but he said that even with the traction control the thing was scary.

    Good luck.

OK, got the Bluetooth thing squared away - I spoke to a stereo installer I know pretty well here. He says no mounting kit but they can fab one no sweat. The kind of head unit I can get is way better than what I have in my Acura: Bluetooth, iPod integration, XM Traffic, XM sat, even Siruis, touchscreen. Not bad. About $1600 installed.

Going to see it in an hour or so with a buddy who has a new 911.

You won't be dissapointed in the car. It's not slow at all. Once you take it for a ride, I believe you will be sold on the 996. A lot of car for the money. They won't be depreciating too much more either - at least not the ones below 60k miles in decent shape. Good luck.

Went and looked. Now I need to decide on a few things, namely how I am going to pay for it (cash/finance) and what insurance is going to cost me. Here are some pics.

Took my lawyer buddy who has owned 3 of them and he was pretty impressed. A few things he mentioned: 1) they're not super comfy and 2) it's hard to do business in them, meaning there isn't anywhere to write things down if you're driving and on the phone (no flat spaces, etc).

My issues primarily were how people would perceive me showing up in this thing - also, I would be driving it to DJ gigs and leaving it in club parking lots....hmmmm.

EDIT: Owner confessed it had been repainted and repaired (on the passenger door only) because someone threw a rock at it (vandalism). Never been hit or otherwise.

What about a CTS-V or S4? Both can be had with low miles for what youre looking to spend or less. Just a thought.

It is a very nice lookin 996 though.

Yeah you can save 30% by doing that and really there isn't room to negotiate at all with insurance companies for cars like this. If the purchase, insurance, fuel and maintenance is going to move you out of your comfort zone, you could always find a slightly "lesser" 911 to purchase.

Not so much a 911 per se...where my head is, though, is that this car is being looked at as a good alternative to a NEW Infiniti G37 coupe which is about $10k more expensive, yet costs significantly less to insure than my Acura. Whatever reason that is, I dunno. I'm taking on a vehicle (911) which has no warranty and is somewhat expensive to repair and will need some extra dough invested to get BT, sat radio, etc. Those are issues I have to weigh when it gets down to it. What makes the most sense? For a weekend type vehicle, this isn't so much an issue. Daily? Yeah, it is. If my Acura breaks down, dealer gives me a loaner and it's handled under warranty. Do I want to go down this road?

The other thing - which I wasn't expecting - is for my bank of 10 years to start asking for check stubs, tax returns, blablablah to finance half this car (roughly $17k). WTF? I've never had to provide that at a dealership. I can write a check, but think there are better uses for the cash.

Home equity would be better and cheaper for financing.

I think banks get cranky when the car is older than 5 years.

They said no sweat if I put the cash in a CD. Eh...home equity...I was probably 50-60%% LTV 2 years ago...my guess is I wouldn't even meet the minimum reqs now with values doing what they did. My GF works in a large bank and they're pretty much calling all of those lines in at the moment.

the way i look at it is. you have one life to live. drive a infinity (which everyone and they're mothers has) or get something not too many people have and you'll enjoy driving. i was in the same boat and ended up getting a 02 turbo vs another SUV or sedan.

    Beeuuaarrkk....!!!!

If your bank of 10 years wants all that tell them to go F themselves in person and tel them that you are moving to another bank.

    Then do it.

Get the 911 and inspire all those kids sitting in minivans and SUV's looking out the window in their boring vehicles. Seeing cars like a 911 growing up is part of the reason I'm an enthusiast today, and part of the reason I've worked hard and gotten an education (hard work+education=$$$=able to afford a nice car) is to be able to afford cars like this, and not be a slacker of society. So you're actually doing a service to the community. Is that justification enough for you? :)
